The liturgy really begins after midnight. The people receive the light of Christ then they "should" go back into the church for matins and liturgy, where the true celebration of the resurrection is celebrated. And it's a bad practice to call it easter or greek easter, it's those are western secular references, it's proper name is Holy Pascha.
To light a candle and enjoy the feasting without a lenten fast or paschal liturgy is missing the point of Pascha, which is Christ resurrection!
