I Flew To Athens For The Greek Orthodox Easter 🇬🇷

◼︎I returned to Athens, my favorite city in Greece, to experience the magical Midnight Ceremony of Greek Orthodox Easter, where everyone lights a candle symbolizing Jesus' eternal flame, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. Before joining the festivities, I did what I always do when I return to Athens: I sought out some delicious, juicy gyros.

Drinking when waiting the Holy Light? First time I saw this, we don't drink in this hour of awaiting.And usually we are inside the church, even in outside we participate in this, we hear the psalms and the Holly Gospel . The priests enter again in church after the
"Άρατε πύλας" (Open gates) and the Resurrection Mass follows until 2 am. The sad is that many people go away after 20' after 00.00 . Its beautiful to stay until the end.

For all who wpuld like to know, the area Emeka visited is Kipseli, down town Athens, the place he went to eat is in Fokionos Negri, a street full of restaurants and cafes and the Church is St. George in St. George's square, one of the most urban places in Athens.

During easter almost everyone in the city goes for vacation in the countryside to spend it with their families, very little amount of people are left and Athens is pretty empty. Anyways glad you enjoyed it🧡 you're always welcome here

Hi, Greeks fast in Holy Week and do not eat Gyro because it contains meat. You can officially eat meat after Saturday midnight resurrection church service. I am surprised you found one on Holy Saturday!! Well done!

Holy Saturday night/vigil is the most holy nights of the whole year, Emeka. I hope you felt that while you were there among all the people who received the Light (represented in the candle) - Christ's Light. The midnight service is 3 hours long.
