Eye-Opening Underwater Footage of Cut Bait Fishing for Striped Bass!

In this segment, we take a look at cut bait fishing for striped bass, and specifically how striped bass sometimes react to frozen cut bait. The type of cut bait used in this video is 4 week old frozen mackerel. The cut bait was definitely not fresh by any means.

Striped bass will eat frozen cut bait, but you are much better off using fresh cut bait when fishing for striped bass. You'll see in this video how stripers often investigate and even smell the bait before biting.

Stripers can definitely be very particular and finicky creatures! To increase your chances, be certain to use the freshest cut bait possible when fishing for stripers. I've had much better luck using cut mackerel that I caught earlier in the day, contrasted to the frozen stuff.

Tight lines! 🎣

Would have loved to see a side by side comparison using fresh bait on the same fish at the same time.

Thank you for this Ryan! I always wondered who they react to chunk bait. If you filmed my bait, you would see 50 crabs walk off with my bait every cast lol awesome footage. I've learned so much from your videos. Especially about Albie's!!!

Well, this clarifies an issue... I've experienced this situation when fishing in the river with fresh and frozen cut bait. When the fish are finicky, there is a noticeable difference.

Lot of looks but few takes.
I'd like a side by side comparison with one having a bit of action like a flashy spoon, wiggly plastic tail or feather skirt.
A dropper loop might have a little current action.
Soaking it in attractant or maybe even hot sauce might help.

Thanks a lot, i'll definitely remember this for next season. I have tried frozen mackerel before and had zero luck. Now I know why! What would you recommend for getting fresh mackerel? Do you catch them yourself? Or do you get them right when they arrive at the tackle shop?

Caught my pb just a few hours ago on 3 week old frozen, and completely thawed out mackerel. Didn’t have time to get fresh stuff, I guess today was the exception.

I use frozen anchovy chunks on the California Delta. Even when the Stripers are running I’m only getting nibbles and hook-ups from immature fish and the occasional Catfish. I’ll try fresh bait.

Caught a 31 inch, 14 pounder November 11th. I like using frozen bait because it stays on the hook well.

I mean you are using the back end for most of the shots and Ive had little success with tails. It does make a difference if its still actually frozen. I think they feel it colder than their surroundings and throw it. But if they are thawed they tend to commit more. I severely outfished my friend sitting right next to me who was using live eels and clams proven more than once. I stand by cut mackerel frozen or fresh any time.

That striper didn’t drop that bait because it was frozen. He dropped it because he could feel the weight of your camera when he picked it up.

I’m from the cape cod area and my best bait for striped bass was sand worms and squid.

Was the bait still frozen while on the hook? It looked like it. We have used frozen mackeral thawed out with success. Id much rather fresh bait but sometimes you have no choice.

How did it eat that and not get hooked?
Makes sense now why I didn’t catch anything on frozen Mack. Thanks

What type of camera is this? Or did you use a water drone?

Were the baits tried frozen, and unfrozen? Or just frozen out of the box?
