The targaryens named their kids after other well known, powerful targaryens.. Visenya for example lol

They like to keep the bloodline pure even the names have to be Valyrian

nah the rhyming names are actually my favorite aspect of the targeryan family tree plus historically you had stuff like Henry the 8th or Louis the 16th so five Aegons ain't even that bad plus each character is actually easy to tell who is who by their personalities and appearances 😁

I believe it’s meant to emulate the naming patterns of the Plantagenets, such as how they named every male king Henry or Edward 🤷‍♂️😂

To be fair, the Starks have what... about a dozen Brandon's in their family tree? At least two Benjen's and a bunch of Bran's as well.

Reckon its deliberate that none of the queens of Westeros have the same name? (Although some of them are very similar.) Visenya, Rhaenys, Alyssa, Ceryse, Alys, Tyanna, Elinor, Rhaena, Jeyne, Alysanne, Aemma, Alicent, Helaena, Rhaenyra, Jaehaera, Daenaera, Daena, Larra (if you count her...), Naerys, Myriah, Aelinor, Dyanna (if you count her...), Betha, Shaera, Rhaella, Cersei, Margaery.

GRRM said in an interview that the naming of the Nobility in Westeros particularly of House Targaryen is repetitive on purpose, its directly based on Medieval nobility, particularly the Royal Families of England and France, how many Henry's, Edwards, Georges, and Louis' were there throughout the Medieval period?

Sounds like English Royal Families. Lotta Johns and Georges (4 in a row)

Names were made in english nobility style. 20 fcking Henries

I mean tbf it’s based off of actual European royalty and the British royals alone are basically all called Henry or John for like the whole of the Middle Ages with a Richard thrown in there once in a while

One thing i notice from almost all the Targaryen names. With the exception of Viserys, Viserra and Duncan (son of Aegon V) All have the same "ae" in their names.

Another quirk I've noticed, have you noticed that Targaryens and Blackfyres whos first name starts with "M" are are savage and cruel rulers? And those whose first names start with "R" live tragic lives that are cut short and don't ever get to Rule uncontested

Lets see... there's 15 people called Aegon, 11 of which have the surname Targaryen, 5 of whom became king (not counting Aegon 1.5 and Young Griff). Always like how they've got their cute little "u" nicknames: the Uncrowned, the Usurper, the Unlucky, the Unworthy, the Unlikely... I suppose Young Griff will have to get one too... Aegon the Undead, perhaps? Yeah... if for some weird improbably reason, GRRM wrote a F&B-esque conclusion to ASOIAF, I could see some maester arguing that since Aegon was called the Undead in reference to is babyhood fakeout death, therefore other reports of the undead (like Robert Strong, Beric, Stoneheart, the Others' wights) aren't actually literal zombies.

Is it odd that despite their propensity for repeating names, no Targaryen ever has the same name as their parents (at least as far as I can tell...), but then when the Blackfyres roll around, all of a sudden there's father-son Daemons?

Well yeah, people in Westeros keep on using the same names. However, the Targaryen names are easier to be recognized as they use Valyrian names instead of Westerosi
