Baseball pitchers can increase strikeouts and decrease hits with spin rate and Magnus force, explains Dr. Ryan Hooper, associate professor of Physics at Lewis University, and Ryan Smith, Physics student at Lewis University.

They analyzed nearly 250 Major League Baseball pitchers to see the impact of the spin rate on the MLB pitcher performance.

What you need to seperate is style of pitches. A curveball moving down (breaking) will have the higest speed rate of any pitch. Average MLB (2, 308 RPM) compared to the 4 seam (2, 226) however the curve ball will fly further after contact than a 4 seam due to the top spin from the curve adding to the backspin off the bat. Even though the exit velocity is greater off of a 4 seam.

Also could mention the lack of spin (knuckle ball) and the formation of a von karman vortex street or vortex shedding causing irregular movement in the air.

How do you increase spin rate on the ball

It’s in the release.
Generates torque in the wrist moving to the fingertips. More of a twist in the wrist releasing energy through the fingers in contact with the ball. A finger flick.

More spin = more Ks except when the knuckleball is involved.

Did you use average spin rate per pitcher, or aggregate every pitch thrown since 2015 (stat cast era) ?
