Solo Wild Camp Ruined at Raven's Crag - Etiquette of Wild Camping, Does It Exist?

It was my first solo wild camp in a while, I was so looking forward to it. Unfortunately it got ruined! Does the etiquette of wild camping really exist? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Please let it be know, I DO NOT think I have the god given right to tell people where to pitch up. I'm just asking for privacy when I'm out on my camps.

I had planned the trip to Raven's Crag after the weather turned nasty up in Scotland so the plan was to do a solo camp here then push on and meet Matt & Martin the next day and head for a mountain tarn camp to do some fishing.
I got there pretty early and found nobody else up there. I had the pick of the spots. That all changed later on as you will find out in this video when I was faced with another group of campers who unintentionally disrupted my solo camping experience.

I'll also provide some tips and insights into the etiquette of wild camping and how to navigate camping near others while respecting nature and preserving the tranquility of our surroundings.

Etiquette of Wild Camping:
Wild camping etiquette is all about respecting the space and privacy of fellow campers. I'll share my experience of how other campers pitched their tents too close to mine, and discuss the importance of giving each other enough space for a comfortable and peaceful camping experience.

Respecting the Outdoors:
Preserving the natural beauty of the outdoors is crucial. The prohibition of fires on mountain or crag tops to protect the environment is a must. Please respect the signs posted on the way up to these beautiful spots for us all to enjoy. There were umpteen fire pits that weren't cleared, leaving massive scaring on the landscape. Come on! LEAVE NO TRACE please!

Creating a Harmonious Atmosphere:
When camping near others, being considerate and mindful of noise and behavior is essential. I'll share practical tips on how to navigate limited camping space, minimize disturbances, and promote a friendly and respectful camping environment.

On a nice note, the winner of the Vango Soul Tent is somewhere within the video for you eagle eyed subscribers. Can the winner please email me their full name & address please. You will find my email on the About section of the channel. For everyone else, there will be plenty more prizes to be won and coming to the channel very soon so make sure you subscribe!

Don't forget to like and share this video with folks who enjoy our great outdoors, as it really helps the channel out. To stay upto date with the videos why not hit the notification bell, that way you won't miss up and coming prizes but most of all... The new videos each week!

Remindsme of the scene after lockdown. The masses piled into national parks and left trash all over the place.

I’m met a young lad out in the dales on Fountains Fell. He was unsure about pitching up as he was new to the game. pointed him to the best spot (which I planned to pitch) and took myself a good 500m away. It’s all about respecting the space and each other’s space.

My mates and I were wild camping in the lake district 35 + years ago because we were very poor and wanted to save money on the campsite fees. Bumpy hilly fields with no amenities 50p to £1.50 pppn. They were the most memorable and exiting holidays I have had.But we just enjoyed them and didn't try to promote it as a thing to do.The paradox is that Youtubers creating videos of this leisure pursuit have created the problem of too many sheeple doing this in too small of a space.Maybe avoid the easy to get to places and go a bit off piste to enjoy the peace and solitude that so many of us need

forgive me, but i thought the etiquette of wild camping included the following advice -

don’t camp in places where there are specific signs up asking you not to.

pitch up at dusk or after dark

break camp at dawn or very soon after

you can’t just follow bits of the accepted etiquette and not all.

We wild camp alone for the solitude. You have every right to complain. People are loosing their sense of respect for one another. Its sad. Thanks for your efforts to bring us some beauty. God knows we need it!

Omg to all those saying he doesn't own the outdoors, I don't recollect him ever saying that!! It's just common courtesy and manners not to pitch up right next to another wild camper. If there isn't room, you look elsewhere. If someone is at a pitch you had your eye on its tough luck, you keep looking.

The irony is it is because of people making YouTube videos about how and where to camp Raven crag isn't somewhere you should be advertising as a place you can "wildcamp"

Thats ridiculous Ant. This is the reason i never go to popular spots, especially easily accessible one and on a weekend. Shame it ruined it for you and well done for dealing with it 👍

Just not on, but sometimes things are sent to try you.oh came across a great simple hack.when opening your packaged camping meal, open it from bottom to top for easier access to all the meal.can’t think of why I’ve never thought of that before so simple love it.👍

So sorry your camp was spoilt by the thoughtlessness of others Ant.
We're not wild campers (missus likes her creature comforts too much, even under canvas lol), but we do pick more basic sites, and always ask if we can have a quiet corner out of the way if possible.
Probably like you, our camping trips are an escape from everyday life, and we just want time and space on our own.
On a more positive note, the views were absolutely awesome, and we're go grateful for you sharing them with Thank You

15:07 Absolutely. I hate that so much. Drives me crazy. I wonder if they picked up their trash as well. Thanks for another great video, Ant. Looks like an incredible hike. The views are amazing, breathtaking. Still too cold here for wild camping here haha 😂

Urggh what's wrong with people Ant? Etiquette or no etiquette, just some flipping common sense would do. 🙄 Hearing them on the video alone was winding me up a treat.

I had an issue once when out in the Peaks, it was around 12am and a couple rocked up, walked right past my tent with their head torches on full beam, chatting away and then pitched up round the corner from me. They then proceeded to shout and laugh for the next 2-3 hours. 🤦

Anyway, if it's any consolation mate, I really enjoyed the video. 🤷

This is a coincidence as I was about to start a series on camping etiquette and the byelaws on Dartmoor.
I've no idea about the Lakes since camping isn't strictly 'legal' but common sense should come into practice when camping near someone else. I'd be pretty certain that campfires would be illegal though. The lighting of them in the hills and mountains, especially leaving scars, sheds a bad light on every camper regardless.
This is what gets camping banned and is likely to keep camping banned. You have every right to be angry/peeved.

Nightmare Ant. I’m sure they could have pitched elsewhere and as for the fire there is no need for that especially if it’s not a cold night. Positive side, great views in the morning and the bobcat standing strong 💪.
