A recent address from an LDS general authority (emeritus) to BYU law students left some of them scratching their heads. The emeritus general authority told the students that when they are studying the law and getting their education, of course, they need to use their brain and their critical thinking skills. But when it comes to the LDS church, you should use a different approach and "think with your heart."

As early convert my constant question was WHERE IS JESUS IN THIS

This is a huge sticking point for me. I'm okay with people practicing faith as a matter of the heart. But, claiming to be the only true church, makes it a matter of the head. If you're going to claim to be the only correct group, implying that all other groups are wrong, and present it in a way that appeals to the head (albeit in an entirely biased way), you are welcoming criticism. "We want you to give your life to this thing because it's the TRUTH, but please don't look into it."

I'm old enough I learned to vote by reading a booklet from the state election officials giving information on candidates, propositions, and judges then remembering which way I wanted to vote at the polling location. With the move in Utah to ballots being mailed out the booklet is no longer mailed out. I figured there must be a way to get that information and found it online. Going through the judges that would be on my particular ballot I noticed a pattern that I went through with all the judges in the booklet. If a judge had a lower than average knowledge of the law in the evaluations, that judge was a graduate of BYU Law. If a judge had a higher than average knowledge of the law, with one exception, they attended a different law school. Some had an undergraduate degree from BYU but went to different law school. The one judge who was a graduate of BYU Law with an above average knowledge of the law is on the Utah State Supreme Court. Granted this is a small sample to work from but the pattern is concerning. It seems that for some time the attitude in the video has been in place at BYU, even if not spoken out loud. The knowledge of the law hasn't been as high a priority as it is at other law schools. Now they are trying to move the students to not practicing critical thinking so they will be even less effective attorneys. Wonder how many cases they will need lose before they realize that knowledge of the law and critical thinking in applying that knowledge will be needed to protect their interests in court. Or maybe they already get their legal counsel from firms that don't hire BYU graduates.

And what if your heart tells you that you should apply your brain and critical thinking skills claims made by the leaders of the LDS church? The admonishment to "think with your heart" comes with a footnote. Footnote: "Thinking with your heart entails listening to, heeding and obeying the leaders of the LDS church. If you think you are thinking with your heart in any way that leads you away from deference to the leaders of the LDS church in all things, you are doing it wrong, you are wrong and you are most likely thinking with your liver or possibly with your lower intestine or perhaps some other organ."

To make a metaphor about attending a faith as a matter of the heart. Every year I celebrate Christmas, including the magic of Santa Clause, the raindeer, elfs, the birth of the Son of God, giving gifts... It makes me happy. It is a matter of the heart, but I know what I'm doing. I'm suspending disbelief. LDS members on the other hand, believe in the way that a 6 year-old believes. They KNOW. There is no question. What I'm saying is that you can engage with faith as an adult engages with Christmas, rather than a child how does. But we can still enjoy it as a matter of the heart. But to me, as soon as you say we are the only TRUTH, then it shifts it to a matter of the mind.

Did I understand correctly, BYU will be studying “come Follow Me”, this edition would be such a great addition to anyone’s curriculum.
