How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Purée for Dogs

Pumpkin puree is an excellent, healthy addition to your dog's diet. Whether added to kibble or included in a raw fed program, pumpkin is a treat for dogs (or cats) of all ages! We feed our dogs pumpkin 2-3 times weekly, and more often if they are having any sort of gastro-intestinal issues.

Pumpkin puree is full of essential nutrients, including Vitamins A, C, E, and B6. It is also rich in mineral content, packed with Calcium, Phosphorous, Potassium and Copper.

Best of all, pumpkin is a natural source of fiber. Adding pumpkin puree to their food will aid in your dog's digestion, reduce anal gland problems, and help resolve both constipation and diarrhea!

This recipe can also be used for making pumpkin puree for human consumption. However, while we will puree "Jack-O-Lantern" style pumpkins for our dogs, smaller "pie pumpkins" and "sugar pumpkins" have the most palatable flavor for human use, including baby foods and pumpkin pies.

NOTE: Please do *NOT* feed your dog (or cat) pumpkin pie *filling*. Canned pumpkin PUREE that is 100% pumpkin has the same health benefits as homemade pumpkin puree - but it is NOT the same thing as pumpkin pie *filling* which contains added sugars, salts, and seasonings which are detrimental to the health of your pet.

Freeze mine in ice cube trays- when frozen, take them out and store in ziplock bags in the freezer. Individually frozen, and takes no time to defrost! Add homemade bone broth if you like.

Can I use fresh pumpkin pie squash for my dog, It's fresh like your video but smaller? Some pumkin are for decorating only and others to cook how will I know which for what? Thanks

I will peel the skin, boil the pumpkin, let it cool, and then mash it. The pumpkin puree is ready.
