The way the get like that is when they sleep there tails have a lot of nerves and a reflex that flicks their tail if something touches it so a chain reaction occurs and eventually urine blood and other things get between their tails hardening it almost like cement making it impossible to escape and I believe only 30-60 rankings have ever been spotted ever.

Yeah. Rat kings typically consist of juveniles, because the 'best' conditions for this generally happen in nests. As others have said, it occurs when urine and feces and mud and sap and other sticky stuff congeals around their tails and hardens. They can't fit in small spaces, they can't hunt anything, and what they do find is never enough for all of them. When rats in the king inevitably die, they're still stuck there, so they just get dragged around by the remaining rats. It's a death sentence for all of them.
And yes, this can happen with any animal that lives in a nest and has a long tail like that. So yeah, squirrel kings and mouse kings can exist.
It's pretty sad. Thank fuck it's really rare.

That video was 4 damn squirrels that someone tied their tails together for the video. Rat Kings get tied cause there is so many rats tryna huddle together in cold months usually and their tails just get pissed and shit on by each other making them all just a big solid chunk they can’t escape
