Thank you for your introduction to White Balance. It is something that I have been thinking about for a few days now. I have WB in my camera set at 5000K, but there are times when I know the colour doesn't look as I remembered it the moment I pressed the shutter button. I shoot in RAW all the time so that I have as much data as possible in the image to work with. But WB still gets me every time and often the image doesn't feel complete unless I know that I'm close to how the WB was at that moment. I'm starting to use a Grey Card and Custom setting on the camera to see if I can have a better understanding of how colour changes through different climate conditions and the colours that reflect this light back. All my photography is landscape and I understand that the quality of the light is capricious, but I'm hoping for a better understanding.

Wow! That was a very good, in-depth explanation. And another good reason to shoot in RAW - sp it can be changed or corrected after the shoot.

The most useful and straight forward explanation as to why it seems to be flipped 👍🏼

Am a big fan of urs. In one of your video on camera flash indoor, I followed as per Ur instructions but still I get yellowish skin even after increases or decrease flash exposure. Kindly suggest

The reason Nikon will not give a Kelvin value for fluorescent light is due to the many variables in which fluorescent lighting is manufactured. To many variables to keep track of. Next time you see fluorescent lights just look at the many different colors after being replaced using whatever they had or got for cheap. Not too many places I have been to will keep the same value of Kelvin when it come to fluorescent replacement bulbs.

Great tips. My Nikon D5500 does not seem to have custom Kelvin option. It does have a few icons e.g., Cloudy, Direct Sun, Flash, Fluorescent, etc. Which (WB) icon setting should I set for SUNRISE and SUNSET?

Correction: Canon did not show any K value for Flash. It said 4000 K for fluorescent. Nikon is saying 5400 K for Flash, which is close to White light temperature, slightly on the blue side.

My mnemonic is that infra is below (as in infrared) and ultra is higher (as in ultraviolet). This helps me remember, for example, that bluer light has a higher temperature even though I think of it as cool.

I've been a Canon photographer for most of my life but something in the back of my mind has always told me that nikon took better images especially with flesh tones. Idk now I'm thinking that it might have something to do with their perception of white balance values.

Hi, yours short videos are of great help. Q: while setting up custom white balance preset in flash photography, the shot on white paper is to be taken with flash or with available ambient light?

Hello Andrew, thank you for all that you do. Nikon d850 shooter in raw, i only know capture nxd editing software. Question is i am having a had time figuring out how to get my white backdrop to match the internet white even when i use the graycard feature on nxd. Thanks again.
