Thank you for making this video. I have a great set of 6X9's from a Chrysler 200. There were no + or - on the speaker connections. I did exactly what you showed. I took the 9volt battery out of my smoke detector and used it. Just like that, I figured out what was the positive and negative side. THANK YOU what a great trick I will use for the rest of my life!!! Oh yeah, I put the battery back in the smoke detector.

I'm actually down a youtube rabbit hole on how to service osciliscopes, but this looked interesting so i clicked.
This is a valid way of testing. Just a warning, 9v is okey for larger drivers like this, but smaller would need lower voltage. Also try and keep it only connected for a short time. Sub second. ie just rub the wire over the contact. those coils are made up of super thin wire and can burn really quick.
That said, I have yet to find a driver where negative is not on the left. Seems to be universal - left, + right with the connectors pointing to you.

Thanks, just what I was looking for. Got second hand speakers for an old car and trying to make something from nothing.

You can always hold any speaker in the world with the magnet up the air and the cone toward the ground face the wire terminals towards your chest the right side terminal is always positive

You answered my question. The smaller terminal is negative. I bought a replacement speaker and it has two same size terminals

How did you determine which wire of the car or deck is going to attach to positive and which to negative terminal of speaker since you said both are gold wires probably not marked as to which is which.

What about tweeters ? Sorry to be a pain but I used Electrolytic capacitors in serious to protect my tweeters and does polarity matter ? Thanks .

So, I've heard it's better to use a double AA because anything over 1.5 volts could blow the coil. I'm assuming this would apply to cheap or old paper cone speakers but have you tried something smaller than a 9 volt?
