Rhodesia showed the world what Africa could be. Zimbabwe showed the world what Africa really is.

Still can't believe 1 British pound used to be equivalent to 1 Zim dollar. Mugabe surely destroyed this country

Thank you for lifting my spirits. I had forgotten just how wonderful my life was surrounded by all my family and friends.

I drove through Bulawayo last year, and it was a depressing sight. the place was a time capsule. All the buildings were the same, and even some of the cars. I even saw a couple Peugeot station wagons. My dad told me all the Whenwes drove them around in the 80s. After being in a civilised nation like Botswana for the majority of my trip, entering Rhodesia and seeing what was left was kind of tragic. It looked like the place looked 50 years ago, except shit and torn to pieces.

This brings tears to my eyes when I compare the state of Zimbabwe now & what I witnessed during my childhood in Rhodesia.

Great video! Loved seeing hillside primary school where my brother and I attended in the 90s and although it was a gvt school it seemed to have maintained good standards for a while after independence and also supersonic in Bulawayo... No doubt the TV my parents purchased when they got married in 86 came from there and in the end it became known as the longest serving TV we owned as we continued to use it until 2003 when we emigrated! I recently herd from some distant relatives who were lucky enough to acquire it at the time, that its still going strong so it must have been made of stern stuff!

That old Renault 4 for a rixi taxi brought back some memories.. Them, the Ford laser and the datsun 120y's once dominated the Bulawayo City taxi scene before the mazda 323's and Nissan sunny's took over towards the late 90s! Was great seeing those two mk1 Ford Cortinas too, in fact one looked to be a GT and if it was, I'll have you know my old man was once a proud owner of that particular model which I always remember him mentioning the delorto twin side draught carburetors on the engine he built once he was fully qualified and not long after his motor mechanic apprenticeship! But let's not forget rhodesia had an abundance of different cars on its roads, mainly the Peugeot 404, Ford Zodiac, Zephers, Prefects & Anglias.. Then also the Morris & Austin 1100's as well as mini's + many many more!!!

The industry in Bulawayo that once made the whole of southern Africa feel like it was destined for greatness, Archer, Lobels, even Dunlop and then of course the Cold Storage Commission as Rhodesia was internationally well recognised for its great beef!

Thanks for the nostalgia

What a sound track digs deeper into one’s soul even though it’s adopted from across the Limpopo River.
Those Jacaranda trees lining Selbourne Avenue you could smell their sweet scent aroma that you’re entering a Great City of Kings

Beautiful pictures.I visited Rhodesia in 1976 on my trip from Kenya to South Africa and it stood out from all the other countries I went through as it was so clean and well run

Everything’s so clean
there’s no trash on the streets
there’s no graffiti on the buildings
plenty of running water
a stable currency
a thriving economy
booming agriculture
plenty of electricity and air conditioning
white people sure know how to build an incredible civilization❤

The opening shot of the freezer trike reminds me of the best award I ever got in Rhodesia - even above the first prize in the Dried Flower Arrangement (Men's Section) at the Melsetter Flower show at the Chimanimani Hotel in1978.

As part of my European recruit course, we had to learn how to zero rifles. We were each given a soldier from an African recruit course to zero the rifle of on a range. My guy was soon hitting the target accurately.

At midday we broke off, with 90 Whites congregating in one group and a similar number of Africans congregating a hundred yards away. A vendor with a tricycle/freezer box combo turned up and served the Whites first. I had a plastic bag of caramel milk, which I bit the corner off and drank. He then went on to serve the Africans.

Suddenly a single figure from the African group broke away, walked the long hundred yards to the White group, came up to me and presented me with another plastic bag of caramel milk for having enabled him to shoot straight. Given the nature of Rhodesian society, it must have taken some moral courage to walk alone up to a milling group of nearly a hundred young whites.

I felt ecstatic that out of all the guys there, I was the only one singled out. I have rarely ever felt so high!

I wish I had kept the caramel milk bag to remind me. It was more valuable than my GSM! Every European got a GSM, but I was the only one to get a pint of caramel milk spontaneously awarded to me.

I am not writing this tongue-in-cheek. I genuinely got a massive rush from this that I have never forgotten.

Every time l watch these, l have a lump in my throat. Things will never be the same. The friends and family lost and scattered all over the world. Now what's left is just a shell . But will always go back home for the little that's left. ❤BYO😭😭
