Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a training strategy involving the use of cuffs or wraps placed around a limb during exercise, to maintain arterial inflow to the muscle while preventing venous return.

BFR training works and everything John said is right on point.. my arms have grown by at least an inch since I started using that technique and I've only been doing it periodically for about six months.. pay attention to what John says about the amount of tension to use with the bands, the amount of weight and rep count used and lastly the number of exercises you do.. it will be painful but the results you'll see is well worth it..

I've done it for bi's and tri's, not legs yet, It gets my bi's sore, which is a feat for me, so painful too. Love it

In undergrad I was in a study regarding this. My friend was doing it for his thesis. He had to get the fancy device that measured exactly how tight it was, commonly used in PT offices. It was so expensive he could only rent one so it was pretty awkward having one leg choked and the other leg free lmao.

BFR shouldn't replace your heavy lifts, you need those, because they strengthen tendons as well as muscle, but it's a great tool to use, especially if you have limited equipment, or as something to target a lacking muscle group at the end of a workout. If you're antisocial like me, and hate public gyms(I've built my own at home, cos I'm a pro welder) and have to switch towns for a month for university, BFR bands and resistance bands make for a great workout.

John, could you make a video about exercise substitutions for those who dont have the proper gear, machines etc. For ppl who train at home gyms with the bare essentials or some minimalistic CF gyms.

Also, would you say your programs could be used in such a training enviroment?

Been doing BRT for about four weeks now. I’ve been careful to measure my bicep to gauge effectiveness. At the end of four weeks, I gained a quarter inch of size to my bicep which I was very surprised about. Another poster mentioned soreness. This technique causes my biceps to be sore for several days after which I think is a testament to its effectiveness. I’ll be interested to measure again in three weeks to access any new gains, but I can already see that they’re growing. I generally hit this technique in the AM while in a fasted state, then lift heavy the same evening without the bands. This combination seems very effective. I have not tried it with Triceps or Legs yet.
