There seems to be some misunderstandings from viewers of this video about why these skills are banned. I'd like to remove these misunderstandings and explain that it is simply not an issue they are dangerous with most of them. There are other reasons.

0:19 *Korbut flip* In 1993 the Woman's Technical Committee (WTC) removed all value elements in the code that started from the feet. They wanted the event to be completely swing based. Furthermore almost no one did them anymore.

0:38 *Mukhina Flip* Same reason as the Korbut flip above.

0:50 *Thomas Salto* This was a rollout skill and was dangerous if the gymnast did not have enough strength to absorb the landing. It was banned for WAG in 1993 and slowly phased out of MAG so neither can do them anymore. Several gymnasts have broken bones doing these skills.

1:10 *Rollout skills* See Thomas salto above.

1:20 *One arm skills on UB* These were blocked in the mid 90s by the WTC and made the same as skills from two arms. This choice was made for two reasons. First the WTC was concerned of inproper physical development in younger gymnasts pushed to do these at a young age. And second, the one arm can change the technique and make the skill easier. Many fans have noticed that one arm Tkatchev on HB can sometimes be done as a one arm Markalov which is easier. It has been over 25 years since this choice was made and it appears set in stone.

1:30 *Back to back tumbling* This technique was banned because of problems with too much stress on the achilles tendons. Note you can still do skills in sequence as long as they go in the same direction (i.e., front layout full punch front tuck 1/2.

1:50 *Over the bar dismounts* These are not that dangerous per say but are banned because they take off from the feet, like the Korbut flip.

2:05. *Sitting dismounts* same as Korbut, Mukhina, etc. Is not swing so can not be performed.

Hope that clears up some misconceptions,

The sad thing is I'm sure it took a number of people getting seriously injured trying to do these in order for them to get banned.

Why do I keep watching these kind of videos when I can't even do a cartwheel..

My sister and I did gymnastics up until high school. In the uneven bars there used to be a regular move called casting off. It's where you would slam your pelvis and stomach area against the lower bar to get leverage and height to reach the top bar They banned it since it was causing reproductive damage in gymnasts. My sister died of soft tissue sarcoma of the stomach last year and now I have malignant tumours in my abdomen. I sometimes wonder if that constant bruising and injury lead to our cancers.

Elena Mukhina, who invented The Mukhina shown in this video, is a very tragic story. Muckina was the world champion when, months before the Olympics, she became paralyzed from the shoulders down, doing not her own, but someone else’s created move. Which move? The now banned Salto, DOUBLED. In one fell swoop, she not only lost her extremely bright gymnastics future, she lost the ability to move anything from the neck down. And she died way before her time, from an infection from a bedsore. Tragic beyond tragic. She was phenomenal in her time. But being pressured by coaching to up the anti more and more, the recklessness and relentless disregard for athlete’s safety that the Soviet coaches and trainers imposed cost her everything. Saddest of all, she said there was a part of her that was actually relieved when she broke her neck. For it meant the brutal training was finally over, and as she lay on the tumbling floor with her neck shattered, she said her first thought was “thank god I won’t be going back to the Olympics”. 😢

I remember going to London with my school to see Korbut compete in the mid 70s- I’ll never forget how I felt looking at the difficulty of her moves from a short distance away. It still blows my mind - plus she was so charming and came over to us to sign autographs. One of my best memories.

Imagine having skills that were so badass that they were banned. Regardless, of the danger factor, that’s some next level shit.

Since the tragedy of the accident of Elena Mukhina became quadriplegic from the tumbling accident in 1980 before the Moscow summer olympics and she was former Soviet gymnast had attempted doing the Thomas salto and she landed and broke her neck. In just one routine, korbut managed to present 2 banned skills. What a legend.

They look so so beautiful and those who were able to do them sure are legends and very skillful. But yeah, I can see how they are dangerous. As wonderful as they are, they are not worth an athlete's life.

Olga Korbut is astounding. She did two banned moves in her uneven bars routine: and one was even named after her! It’s disappointing that the judges only gave her silver.

I still keep thinking about the fact that Elena Mukhina had a broken leg and they still forced her to do the Thomas Salto. That was criminal.
