My ex was Korean and his mom made me spaghetti once. I choked down the first bowl, told her it was good, and then told her I was full when she offered seconds because it was SO SWEET. Like, disgustingly sweet. I made a comment about it to my ex (away from his mom, of course), and he insisted spaghetti is supposed to be sweet. He said that's how Italians made it. My mom learned to cook from her Italian grandmother, so I KNOW spaghetti is not supposed to be sweet, but he was convinced that it was. I dropped it and have never eaten spaghetti there again. ><

And 'looking good', as well as couples culture... I completely know what you mean, I feel SO self-conscious in Korea. I genuinely enjoy my own company, but I feel the pressure to look nice and be in a large group of people in Korea. Traveling alone there is so difficult just because of the pressure to be in a group/couple. And the fact that nothing fits me and ppl are always evaluating your appearance (or at least, that's what it feels like) is just so judgmental, and I really do dislike that aspect of Korea.
But you know, I still liked living in Korea when I did and I enjoyed many aspects of being there. It's just that there are always a few things you can dislike about living anywhere, and I think you pinpointed the ones in Korea very well in this video.

Since the staple food of Koreans is rice, bread is considered a snack and made sweet. I want to go to a foreign country someday and try unsweetened bread.
I was a little inclined to think that it's normal to dress well, but after watching your video, I don't know why people don't usually wear comfortable and fun clothes outside. It's nice to have variety. I want to learn English hard and learn the thoughts of other countries.
thanks for the good video
^-^

By the way, the clothes in that photo are school uniforms. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Another great video... I opted for this video, as there are too many videos out there, showing korea in an amazing light. Korea like everywhere else, has it's problems and issues. I'll be honest..I'm on the korea diet..as I don't want to go looking the way I do ... thanks again Megan.. you're a star 🌟

I totally agree on the sweet issue. I went to Korea about 15 years ago and remember trying the local burgers (not-US chains). The burgers were overall very good: excellent meat, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, fresh buns. However, the pickles were always sweet pickles. I love dill pickles in my burgers, but have never found a use for sweet pickles. That being said, I did find a lot of places that had very good espresso drinks, with what I thought was a good coffee ratio. Hopefully you can find places that make them to your taste.

As always, I love the video 😊 As an European, I had also troubles with the water in Korea. I had break out on my forehead quite often. After 1 week back in my country, all my pimples disappeared magically 😅 I am not sure if it is the air, the pollution, the water or the sugar everywhere in the food but there is definitely something different. I was also shocked by the cheese that was sweet sometimes, the non-existing raspberries and by the bread and chocolate quality. I avoided the European food as much as possible there. Fortunately, Korean food was delicious 😇 Now that I am back in my country, I am happy about all these differences because it makes me less sad. I already miss living there and will definitely come back to see my friends in the future (but I will be on a tourist visa next time, which will be hell 😆). However, noticing the differences allowed me to appreciate my life in my country even more. Each country has its good and bad sides, and it is what makes travelling a fun and interesting experience 😊

im korean. I always go to a restaurant by myself to watch a movie. In Korea, the number of people living alone is also increasing. unlike the western And in Korea, bread is an image that is sweet. Because it's not staple food. But It's wasn't originally, Under the influence of a famous chef Much Korean food is getting sweeter, so there are voices of criticism. North Korean defectors often criticize South Korean food for being sweet.

I couldn't agree more when you started talking about the sweet problem, I was like "omg yes!". I think the most shocking thing for me was when I got a pizza with honey or whipped cream and when when they dipped my hot dog in sugar...

Most cafés use 1oz of coffee (espresso shots) and you can add an extra shot if you need more. The coffee here just seems a lot stronger tasting than in the states.

2:51 Megan, you must have bought that garlic bread from Paris Baguette. Yes, it's sweet. People are used to it however and once the taste buds gravitate to the blah, sugary taste, it's hard to move back. Another pet peeve: how come there is no solid cheese, only sliced cheese? Why is dairy so expensive? Where is heavy cream or half & half? Where is pepperoni, salami, corned beef and pastrami at the so called deli? How come there are no frozen vegetables or leafy greens like spinach, collard greens or kale? Inquiring minds wanna know! Why is the bathroom so cold in the so-called "ondol" heating system that Westerners rave about? But how do you put up with the bathroom that is freezing? Yes, inquiring minds wanna know!

Agree! We just ate packaged cold noodle soup from Koreana in Oakland, good but could do without the added sweetness. I do not remember the same being sweet in Korea. Also pulgogi sometimes sold in Costco is way too sweet. At least the sugar has not infiltrated Costco kimchi yet!!! Cheers to all.

2:50 the GARLIC BREAD - when I visited Korea I was having a rough day (on my period too) and I happened to find garlic bread at the store. I was so excited to eat it when I got to the hotel but I took a bite and it was SWEET. I don't know why but that was my breaking point and I cried

Moving back to Korea soon, will be my third and final time. I’m American female. My Korean citizen husband (33+ yrs) will go ahead of me and figure it all out and get us an apt so I hope I can quarantine with him when I arrive. Thanks for your videos. Not all will apply to my situation as I’ll become a perm resident there. But I extract the parts that will and make notes!!

I totally agree that the stuff you think should taste savory isn’t at all but it just go to so how culturally different they are from the western world which in my opinion is okay. Trying something for the first is an experience like no other.
