- MPV is the CLI backend to Celluloid
- Celluloid is GTK based frontend to MPV - SMPlayer is a QT based frontend to MPV
- MPC-HC has the Video Codecs baked in just like VLC
- VLC is MUCH MORE than a video player - if that is all you use it for... Use an alternative it will perform better.
- SMPlayer also works in Windows and is a great alternative.

EDIT: Same Earlier comment vanished Magically.
"Abra-ca-dabra"

VLC= Work Truck, just gets the work done.

MPC-HC= Toyota Supra, Only for enthusiast.

MPC-HC: -Requires externel codecs to be downloaded.
-No support for native 7.1 (without 3rdparty plugins)
-No auto support for 5.1 to stereo.
-No update since years.
-New codecs have to be constantly updated. (which have their additional bloatware)

VLC: Just throw anything on me mate.

VLC is bloated with real useful features though.

Never had an issue with vlc. Have had many issues with other players though. In fact vlc has resolved many issues Iv experienced on other players.

I think this video could have been called "Tired of VLC? Try these alternatives"

I know it's your opinion, but it would be good to show the issues you have had with VLC.
I personally have never had problems with VLC on Linux and Windows. My son had a mountain of problems with media player and when he switched to VLC no problems.
Not just playing, but converting, saving, streaming, capturing etc and it's fast on my PC.
No issues with me. I'm staying with it.

Nope. Still going to use VLC. Never had a problem with it. Just works. Plays everything.

pro tip if you ever have problems playing videos just install vlc. it includes all the codecs you could need and play almost anything

Important note, the reason MPC-HC hasn't been updated is that the fork is officially dead (the last update message said the owner is ending development and the website has been updated since then to advise against using it). While it's not getting any active development, there is still an active fork maintained by clsid2, which has been continuing to update over the last few years. The fork's most recent release was 1.9.5 just last week.

Alternatively, there was another popular fork of MPC called Black Edition. I've never used either, so I don't know what the major differences are.

I'm not impressed by this video at all... hey! are you using VLC, then
you are a creature of habit and should change because... reasons. I
failed to hear any substancially arguments that VLC lives up to the
definition of bloatware.

Bloatware is software that has unnecessary features that use large
amounts of memory and RAM. Software comes to be known as bloatware when
it becomes so unwieldy that its functionality is drowned out by its
useless features.

I'm not saying there aren't any arguments to be made, but it's not like
windows 10 that have a bunch of totally unrelated apps and what not that
users have not asked for in the first place. At least to my knowledge
VLC's features are releated to it's purpose as a media player is it not?

Not that I really care... if it's portable and works I probably have it
on my computer, the one that crashes the least is the one that's end up
being most used. Last year VLC crashed alot on my system, did know
why... I ended up using POT player for a while, until VLC worked
again.... Not a creature of habit, I'm a creature of descerment.

Right from their website: "MPC-HC is not under development since 2017. Please switch to something else"

VLC solves the problem of ecosystem fragmentation, and solves it well.

How is VLC bloated? I think the argument needed more weight.

mpv is awesome. plays everything, super efficient, super configurable. if you want a gui, celluloid and smplayer are great wrappers.

VLC got so bad, it feels so heavy now. Years ago it played everything, now it's so bugged up and it really is annoying. I agree with your statement. I will see what's better for me. VLC is not good anymore.

You need to give people more of a reason then "it's bloated" to get them to leave. I think you need to make a part 2 to clear it up tbh. Other than this video, I love your content!

I simply don't recognise the VLC you're describing here.

I don't find VLC bloated. Loads instantly, all the basic functionality just works as expected for standard stuff and the advanced stuff is there. I'm not saying you shouldn't try alternatives, but feature rich isn't bloated. It isn't WinAmp.

My personal preferences:

On windows,
video player: VLC
audio player: Music Bee

On android,
video player: MX Player
audio player: Pulsar Music Player

I'm fine trying out alternatives, but damn, I've just never had issues with VLC in the last 8-10 years, and on really mediocre hardware at that.
