Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and the continent’s largest economy, is populated by dynamic and talented citizens, but has faced steep challenges in development, leadership and governance. Poverty is widespread. The country is currently embattled by terrorism, general insecurity, a depressed economy, and by challenges from separatist agitations to the existential legitimacy of the Nigerian state.

How can NIgeria achieve transformation economically and politically? Taking a political economy approach into the Nigerian conundrum, this public lecture by Professor Kingsley Moghalu, Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford’s Oxford Martin School, examines how the West African country’s foundation as a British colony, and contemporary challenges of nationhood and political order formation, the resource curse of oil, corruption, and the absence of a strong leadership culture have created incentives for Nigeria’s current dysfunction. He identifies not just seven critical challenges, but also offers seven paths to reform and a longer term resolution of the country’s political and economic challenges. The result, if his prescriptions happen, could be the long-delayed emergence of Africa’s first truly indigenous global power.

To profer solution to any problem; you first need to understand the problem. Professor Kingsley moghalu clearly understood what the problem of Nigeria is. His level of vision and articulation towards what needs to be done to get Nigeria working again can only come from a man who is truly ready to serve his people.

Amazing. I like the part where he says 'you cannot unscramble the scramble for Africa'. I get tired listening to so-called intellectuals who go on bellyaching about colonialism. we must first of all be very pragmatic and realistic to move forward. Nothing gets served on a platter. The fact that many of our intellectuals, including young activists cannot get beyond this realisation, is perhaps our biggest issue. And until... until...

I’m Ghanaian and I like his thoughts on the world view on the black race and the role Nigeria 🇳🇬 is destined to play. Nkrumah’s foreign policy would’ve been the best only if he had received support from the most powerful African country but Nigerians showed little interest in global politics hopefully now things will change

Those Nigerians with capacity for rational electoral choices, a large number of them do not participate in the voting process. Those who go out to voting centers, line up and indeed cast votes do not have the capacity for rational electoral choices. The consequence is the poor leadership birthed by the electoral system. I canvassed for him in the last dispensation. I will do same again in the coming election. His thoughts and mine are well aligned.

Grassroot mobilisation is key like he said, to increasing his chances in the 2023 election.

I think, a careful examination of the emergence of ENDSARS protest might present some template for Nigerian youth mobilisation

People have been talking for at least 40 years of how Nigeria will become the "next big thing" and it has never lived up to the billing. Instead we have witnessed a steady decline in living conditions.
So forgive those of us who fail to get excited at the prospect of another potential "false dawn".

His Castro remark reveals a naivete that one can always have control over their perception and treatment in the international arena.

Immigration and Naturalization involves officers of government when the political subdivision involves a budget of the government and oath of the officers to communicate about contracts of both tangible and intangible issues of human capital in citizenship. When detainee involves the Convention Against Torture Cruel and Inhumane Treatment that sever, and or extreme, measure is taken against a human person does the government argue the measure taken or the legal immunity of the police and military? Can comparatively law address the Constitution rule of law when treaty performs as law as opposed to Convention ratification? Per se, the U.S. Arms Treaty, or the International Postal Affairs by treaty?
