The term anaphora is a literary and rhetorical device wherein a word or a phrase is repeated at the beginning of two or more successive sentences. It is used in writing to lay emphasis on certain words, make the readers feel pleasure and memorize easily the lines of poetry or sentences. Anaphora is mostly used in novels, short stories, speeches, essays and poetry.

On the other hand, epiphora is the opposite of anaphora. It is the repetition of words or phrases at the end of two or more sentences. The combination of anaphora and epiphora is called symploce.

Anaphora is not only limited to literature, it is also used in everyday speech.
For example, in the following sentences, the repetition of the phrase, pardon me, is an example of anaphora in everyday speech:

“Pardon me! Pardon me for the sake of God! Pardon me for the sake of my family! Pardon me for the sake my people! “Pardon me! Pardon me for the sake of God! Pardon me for the sake of my family! Pardon me for the sake my people!
