What is an Anaphora?

Get to know poetic techniques in 60 seconds or less. Let's define an allegory.

----
Alongside my regular content (which won’t be changing at all, don’t worry!), I’m planning a series of shorts looking at defining basic literary techniques and poetic structures - the idea is to create short snippets which are easily digestible and then provide links in the description to my longer videos which discuss that technique in context and give examples. Hopefully I’ll learn a new skill, teach you guys something, and hopefully attract a new audience in the process! Or maybe it’ll be a big failure no one watches but I won’t know until I try it!

I rather like these little shorts,
I rather like your book reports,
I rather like hearing your thoughts,
I rather like your sharp retorts.

I think putting an example at the end would really hammer home the concept!

Surprisingly love those Shorts as s format. Your summary of each stylistic device is succinct and to the Point.

Honestly feels a bit like listening to a flash card which is super useful

In case anyone is interested, the third counterpart to these techniques is anastrophe. Anastrophe is the repetition of a word or phrase at the end of one sentence and beginning of the next.

Hasn’t heard of this one, but as you explained it it sounds very biblical, I think the psalms use this a lot. So does American poet Carl Sandburg. Now I know the word for that!

Where were you, when I was stuck interpreting poetry?
Where were you, when I wrote my last exam?
But you are here, when I start to study library and information science.
So thank you!

Sidenote but I really like the drawings of the ducky and the piggy to each side of you. They look so cute.

Anaphora, derived from the Greek verb anaphero, meaning "to bring back" or "to bring up."

As a prefix, ana often conveys repitition. For instance, the Greek word thallo means "to grow up" or "to bloom, " but anathallo means "grow up again, bloom again." The adjective kainos means "new." Anakainos means "renew." Ktizo means "create, " anaktizo means "create anew, " etc.

Phero means "to bring" or "to bear" (Christopher: bearer of Christ). Etymology isn't normally the best way to define words, but in this case it fits well with anaphora referring to repitition in prose or poetry. Even in the Greek language itself, there's what's known as the anaphoric use of the article. That is, when the article is used with a noun that had initially been introduced without the article. The article basically has the function of linking back to it.

Kendrick Lamar:

"I beat yo' ass, keep talkin' back
I beat yo' ass, who bought you that?
You stole it, I beat yo' ass if you say that game is broken
I beat yo' ass if you jump on my couch
I beat yo' ass if you walk in this house with tears in your eyes"

I know these are "shorts" but i would have loved a quick example of this. Im totally ignorant to all things poetry so a small example would help me get it better.

This is a great idea. I don't know a lot about poetry but I like to read it & your videos will be a good way to skim some useful terms. Cheers
