The Roman Empire was perfect for spread of Christianity. The Romans were followers of Greek and German pagan tradition with emphasis on masculinity, hierarchy, order, heroism, conquest. But those predominantly male treats often lead to excesses and tyranny. Christianity was a counterbalancing force to this, it brought the principle of universal love, compassion, humility and submission to God's will.
Together it created a perfect balance, the greatest civilisation on Earth.

Although I disagree that Christianity would have ceased to exist if not for the existence of the Roman Empire, it would have been much more of a difficult and a longer lasting task for its spread, most likely its only strongholds becoming helenic Middle East, some Parthian confederacies, and Ethiopia (of course over time it would be Greece, Egypt, some Avars and later the Celts possibly). Christianity has the capability to survive due to God and can never be put out.
