Meet WireGuard, the new hotness in VPN

Self hosting a VPN has traditionally been hard to set up and we've had very few options. That is until WireGuard came about. WireGuard is an extremely simple yet fast and modern VPN that utilizes state-of-the-art cryptography. It also supports running inside of a Docker container and that's exactly what we'll be using in this tutorial!

I switched from ovpn to wireguard last week, it is running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. I had a 47% increase in throughput and a 11% decrease in latency, and it's not even running on kernel 5.6, it is on 4.19. Needless to say I'm more than happy with the switch

this is one of the most valuable channels on yt. I have spend last month doing basically nothing else (apart from working and gaming obviously) but watching your videos, then bought an 8GB raspberry pi 4 and ran ubuntu server with docker and portainer, plus 10+ containers already, plus some additional containers on my old raspi3. keep up the great work!

Wow, can't believe how easy that was! The last time I did this was with a Raspberry Pi 1 a few years ago with OpenVPN and it was a pain. This was totally opposite. Thanks for another great video.

Spun this on Portainer. Literally took me longer to watch the video than to set up and connect to my homelab through WireGuard. Many thanks!

For those who aren't able to establish a handshake, try port forwarding on your router! I was trying to figure this out for a long time until I decided to just portforward to see what would happen. And thankfully, it worked miraculously!

Your port ranges should be 51820, the local IP should point to the device that's hosting WireGuard (in my case, a Raspberry Pi), and protocol is UDP.

that was super easy. i was expecting way more faffing around to get it to work, but i just ran docker compose and scanned the qr code with the app and it is working flawlessly.

Love the best part about handshake. That's really help.

Hey, nice vid. Really appreciate that you care to list some potential issues with wireguard and not just hyping it up

I used the docker-compose method and I cant connect to the internet or anything on my local network. its port forwarded and setup as it should be and on my phone I can see bytes TX and RX but cant get any website or local network

Great I get guacamole running and now you turn around with this. I'll definitely have to spin this up and give it a run before trying to move my stuff over from OpenVPN to WireGuard. Thanks for the great informative video.

@4:46 its not clear what to do for people using just their IP. What i'm not following is how scanning the QR code relates to my device connecting to my home network. How does the app know my home networks public IP? Do I just need to get dynamic DNS (have not tried yet) working and use the environment veriable? Thanks.

Yea, I agree, that was the first thing I was thinking when I first saw your channel, Johnny Depp with glasses

Having run OpenVPN for a few years I had heard about WireGuard but never really tried it out.
After watching this and seeing how easy it was I just retired my OVPN setup for a Wireguard one. So much easier to setup and faster speeds as well. IDK why I didn't switch sooner tbh

Really like Wireguard. I tried OpenVPN previously but the configuration was so complex I was never really certain whether I'd screwed something up and left something insecure. Wireguard was very simple by comparison. On Android you can use Tasker to automatically switch Wireguard on when you leave your home wi-fi, so you always have access to your self-hosted stuff.

Great video. WireGuard looks way easier and quicker to set up in comparison to OpenVPN, especially clientside.
