I’m genuinely surprised the indigenous population was independent for so long when surrounded by strong empires throughout its history

1. You should have included the period where the Dutch occupied Pescadores for 2 years (1622 to 1624). After being beaten by pirates armed with British canon that the Ming government recruited, the Ming officials told them to go occupy Formosa, since no one lives there. 2. Koxinga never occupied Northern Taiwan. The Dutch only abandoned the forts in Northern Taiwan, came back, and abandoned it again, since the Qing government force migrated all the coastal people in Fujian and it became impossible to do business with China from Taiwan.

From 1949 to 1955, the other territory of Kuomintang should not only include islands in South China Sea but also islands in eastern ZheJiang such as Yushan, DongJi, DaChen and NanJi, these islands weren’t occupied by PLA until the war happened in YiJiangShan 1955.

it was full of fujian's farmer migrant to formosa and nearby island thousand years before any of these "government/colony" take over control. even current day ryukyu islands were having similar culture identity compare to fujian and zhejiang ppl. the main reason for fujian farmer to migrant is simply because its mountainous region, lacking farmland. so part of them have to leave home town to seek new opportunity.
