My advice is not to just copy mods folder but the entire sims 4 folder. That way you can’t lose any saves or sims or households

Seems obvious but I have to say it! Mod creators have families and friends and mental health and physical health and jobs and school just like us! They’re not EA and they can’t get their mod work covered by other staff if they can’t get to updates right away. Be kind and understanding and GRATEFUL when communicating with them. Maybe this will help struggling players with updating their mods. With the new update coming tomorrow I wanted to share what I do when there's an update. These are only tips do what you want but this has been working for me for the last few years and i never got my saves/mods folder messed up or my game breaking. So this is what I do in order:

the auto updates option in your origin/ea app so that YOU can control when you want to do it. You have to this BEFORE the update comes out.

I normally play offline for a few days/weeks so i wait before updating the game (to see if it there's some beugs created bc of it).

When you are ready to update the game :

1. Take out the mods folder (Don't update with your mods folder in! There's a chance your game will break or you could lose saves)

2. I also have a backup saves folder so I make a copy of my saves and paste the files in my backup folder (for me its the most important step!! I backup my saves everytime I play)

3. I also make a copy of my tray folder just in case (only when I know its been a long time since my last backup otherwise its not really necessary)

4. I also have a backup of my mods (in case they get deleted somehow (I make a backup maybe once or twice a month)

5. I delete the localthumbcache

6. Update the game.

After the update I launch the game without mods just to see if everything's fine and then close it. (I don't play without mods especially cc and since all my sims have cc I just can't play without them and well I don't want to ahahaha) (I never load into a household if the mods folder is still out (just in case, I only go into the main menu and see if the game launchs fine then close). Dont save !! Bc you will have to reapply all cc to your houses/sims.

I only put back the mods I know are updated. For the rest, for the ones that arent updated yet I always have a tempory folder called "To be updated"

Also ALWAYS check for UI mods they always tend to break so if your game looks weird its probably that (UI CHEATS, Color Slider, Tool mod, Any cc wrench override, More columns in CAS, More traits in CAS, any CAS traits better build buy..)

If you have mods, I recommend backing up all the data and saves, as well as the tray folder. If you want to be more careful, play offline for like a week or two while modders update their mods. Also, it gives time for EA to drop hot-fixes.

TO CHECK YOUR MODS, check out Scarlet's Realm's Mod List. MANY creators report to them about their mods. They won't have EVERY mod, but they definitely have all the big ones and more. The Mod List will tell you exactly whats wrong with the mod, if it's broken, updated, obsolete, or compatible with the latest patch.

You don't have to move the Mods folder, just rename it. I normally rename it to "ModsBak". The game ignores it completely because it looks for "Mods". Then you can move stuff over bit by bit.

I just play offline until all mods are updated as usual.. I was already playing offline because I didn’t want to be bothered by the reaper rewards, as I found them to be too invasive. I don’t understand why this never proposed as an option for players.

I’m hoping they also allow for us to have more customization with hair colors. Especially the two tone hairs. I doubt it as it hasn’t really been hinted. But I did notice quite a few two tone hairs in the trailer.

Extra steps you can take besides backup:
- Wait before updating! We know things are buggy right after, so why not disable auto update and go on when you know your fave mods are also up to date. Same with buying the new pack, even if we're super excited about it
- Test things in a "throwaway" save to avoid corruption of your real game
- Remember devs and modders are just humans. The real evil is crunch time and capitalism. We're often pissed at EA, but to be honest, the whole gaming industry is pretty much shit. Be safe, take a breath and step back before being rude (or straight up harmful) to someone just doing their job under an unfair system. We love the Sims, let's keep it safe for everyone 💚

I have a Set Family Relationship mod that allows you to set more relationship types between my sims if they’re cousins or step-parents/siblings or descendants etc. I’m hoping that one updates soon cause it’s my favorite and it prevents my distantly related sims from “keeping it in the family” if you catch my drift
