Paul Gilbert is just the best. Is a walking jukebox, technical monster, can play anything that uses a pick, and just a super cool nice dude.

What I find incredible is that YM managed to reach a level of playability never seen before at the time, even though he was very young. The greatest proof of this is that there are guitarists who only reached a similar level after reaching an advanced age. YM and other guys like him sacrificed the early years of their youth for the sake of the guitar, aiming for this astonishing level. This shows the unsuspecting that it's not just partying that makes a rockstar.

Yngwie Malmsteen is a GOD! Inventor 40 plus year career and many people don't know he has composed a full symphony orchestra, a full New Age album that went into the new age charts at number1.

A friend of mine threw in the Rising Force cd for me in the mid 80s. Black Star comes on, my jaw just dropped. I couldn't even comprehend it, and I thought I heard everything on the guitar. The fact that guys like Gilbert and Becker picked that style so quickly is just as mind boggling.

Don´t forget that most of the scale/arpeggio runs you heard on Yngwie´s first records are very much identical to what Uli Jon Roth did on he´s Electric Sun records released 1979 and 1981, and probably recorded a few year before that. Yngwie don´t talk much about Uli but it´s very clear he must have heard Uli. There is also some song from Scorpions time like "Sails of Charon" that have much simlar runs! On the record Beyond the Astral Skyes released 1985, recorded at about 1981-82 you find it all, arpeggios and runs, and even Zeno Roth, Uli´s brother plays on that record, full skilled on all those licks!

Yngwie Malmsteen is a legend a true Icon and an inventor! After 40 plus year career the guy is still thriving still going strong. The amount of billion dollar companies that are using his name his image putting out great products with him is insane! Fender signature model, Seymour Duncan signature model, Dunlop signature model rumor has it they are coming out with two more products with him, Marshall signature model, Ovation signature model, Lewitt microphones the list goes on. Last album he released went straight into the Billboard charts at 80! In China, India, Japan hit the charts at number one! Last European show Sold Out some as much as 5000 seats. Jeff Bezos used his music yes only his music in Blue Original. He is honored in three museums in Sweden, Italy and France. The Mayor of Bologna Italy greeted Yngwie Malmsteen as Yngwie Malmsteen gifted his guitar to the city. I will always be a loyal fan looking forward to his US 40th Anniversary tour!!!!

I went to MI in 1986. Paul was my private teacher for awhile. Fun times.

Paul Gilbert mastered Yngwie style shred like 40 years ago

Mike Varney called Gilbert, and played Yngwie's Demo...I think it was the intro to hot on your heels from Steeler...it blew Gilbert away...the picking especially...Gilbert's own words: "I better practice harder"

Just for the record... I'm pretty sure Gilbert played Yngwie's stuff before he met this guy. There are early videos of Gilbert playing Yngwie excerpts when he was very young, so I'm sure he was familiar with him.

Way back when Yngwie first came out, my cousin's guitarist was like Paul Gilbert. Listened to the first album and could pretty much play along within an hour. Some people can get it quickly. I don't have that. 😊

Yes ...Gilbert helped me with 3 note per string patterns when it was basically unheard of then...yes...relative minor...jamming and sharing ideas with so many great players in 85 when I was there. Oh the STORIES!!

Paul Gilbert told a different story though. He said 1st time hearing Yngwie made him practice playing fast metronomically cuz he wasn't able to yet. So I'd guess this story happened way after that and that's why Paul was able to quickly explain and replicate it, so it's not his 1st time hearing Yngwie.

Nice story!, Paul was really a brilliant guitar student at G.I.T, he is really the guitar jukebox. But Dave's story actually showed how great Yngwie Malmsteen was at that time. I met a pro guitarist who also graduated at Musicians institute, and He said that in 1985 there is even a course/curriculum named "Yngwie 101" purely made to satisfy the hunger and curiosity of guitar students in order demystify "Rising Force" and how Baroque Classical music and shred is actually a beautiful combination. Imagine a 19 year old guitarist from Sweden and his fretwork is a subject being studied by the best music school and top guitar players. Man, Yngwie FTW.🤘

Probably not just Phrygian. Phrygian Dominant, the 5th mode of harmonic minor. Naturally occurring symmetrical diminished and augmented chords patterns, 3 pairs of semitone combinations that give tension and release, one big minor third gap for distinctive character. Instant gravitas and baroque sound and the kind of lightening fast dark mysterious dramatic passages as already explored centuries ago by violinists and pianists.
