Planting Red Potatoes in Containers from Grocery Store

Can we plant red potatoes in the fall? We think so due to our mild winters here in Texas. we planted in containers and will cut back the tops if needed during a frost or a freeze. We did this last year and had success. If you decide to plant, make sure you have a way to cover them throughout the winter months and you should be fine.

Thank you for such encouragement. We've had a horrible summer too so I just felt like giving up but you re-invigorated my fighting spirit. I'm going to do the same, plant whatever!!! Thank you!!

I just planted two tubs of red potatoes yesterday. They were leftovers from my May harvest. I figured that at this point, I have nothing to lose. I will be happy to get enough potatoes to use for my seed potatoes in February. Hope you have much success.

Glad to see you so busy in the garden again! (I know you were busy during the peak of the heat, but this looks like a more fun type of busy.). Fingers crossed for the potatoes!!

Oh Jill! Last year I grew a lot of potatoes in 5 gallon buckets. Every bucket was full of potatoes, and nice size too for me. I live alone, so I had plenty! I was shocked. I had 8 buckets and all were full. So…this year, I bought two 20 pound grow bags..because…you know…I did so well last year and I had a big head…Lol!! Well…I got about 12 potatoes altogether from those two grow bags. What a dismal harvest. My head deflated and Mother Nature showed me!! Lol…

I have been doing that very thing....just plant anything & everything with this ever changing weather.

YEP! Just plant. You never know until you stick something in the ground, how it will do! I have had the perfect weather for certain crops and got NOTHING. Then terrible conditions for other things and get something. So, If the weeds are growing, get some seeds planted! Besides, it brings so much joy, popping seeds in the ground. 😊😊

I planted grocery store potatoes today too. They’ve been sitting growing eyes for like a month now, so they needed to be put in the ground!

I went to Dollar general yesterday and had to buy me 4 seed trays so I can start seeds. Some of the seed trays I had split. I am hoping this morning I can get brussel sprouts seeds planted in my pots, and broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, , lettuces seeds in my seed trays. I will be happy if I can get those done before it gets to hot here. Having health issues this morning so may not get everything done I want but going to try. I have some russet potatoes that have eyes on them, and I have planned on planting them in cardboard boxes this week in my little greenhouse. I am also planting spinach seeds.
