i was a sewage worker in the uk and that pile of crud you saw would mainly be sanitary pads and tampons mixed in with toilet paper. the guys with the hoses are used to brake up large balls of fat (as big as washing machines) that block up the sewer. if the hose didn't work you have to get in there with a steel bar and start hacking away.

Olympics Head: "Hey, I have an idea.... let's hold the Triathlon right in the Seine. We can show the world how clean the Seine has become!"

Chris (a bit further upstream) 7:06--"It is what you think it is!"

I appreciate you going to places like this--the lesser documented and toured by travel blog locations. Modern sewage is a very necessary thing, and we all take for granted the workers that move our... waste through towns and cities, treat it and basically do the dirty work of keeping our world clean. This is fascinating, even if it is gross.

Thanks, Chris! I have to say that most of us never think beyond flushing, but that sh*t has to go somewhere! I've a whole new appreciation for sewage treatment plants and those who work to keep us "clean". You are a very brave one, my Friend!

I use to work for a company we use to change pumps and valves under those grates your walking on. We had to add bacterial yeast to the water, because of the Meth waste from people kills the good bacteria in the sewage systems.

I was a control system engineer in NOLA on the pump stations and water/wastewater treatment plants. Often working with pumps that took water from the Mississippi to the plant for processing. Including the pump stations on the canal that failed during Katrina, the 17th Street Canal.

I can tell you, from experience, that the French didn't learn their lesson about redirecting rivers when they started building cities in the States. At least we started treating our water before it goes back into the river.

Thanks for sharing this because that's one place I am in no hurry to see and/or smell.

That was amazing, Chris. Well done (and the ladies you were with) We have sewer Tours here in Brighton in the UK, but you have to be kitted out with PPE before going down and the tour areas are all cleaned before visiting. I'm surprised that the EU allows visits to areas like this.

Did you have to like sign a waiver to go to this museum? Cuz that can't be good for your health lol. The idea of a public attraction letting you enter an active sewer sounds wild.
