*** Today's Sudoku***

Today marks the return of Richard Stolk, The Sudoku Professor, to the channel with his latest puzzle (number 349!) from his Sudoku Variant Series. This is just such a clever sudoku and it's not THAT hard. Do give it a try at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits outside the grid have to be placed in the corresponding row/column in the given order, where the second digit is placed X cells away from the first digit and X is the digit in the first cell of that row/column.

@13:55, a little bit of luck. In isolation, if you have a 3 in r8c1, the 5 could've gone in r8c2, and a 1 in r8 c5, so there were really two places a 1 could go in box 8. However, the column clue for c5 actually rules that out; if you put the 1 in r8c5, then the column clue, which says that 6 must occur after the 1, would only have one place to go; r9c5. But now, the 1 and 6 are 1 cell apart, placing a 1 in r1c5, which would be 2 1s in c5. Impossible! So, r8c6 is indeed correct, but with a small smidge of extra logic needed.

Lucky.

At 13:36, Simon made an assumption that a 3 in r8c1 would force how the 5 and the 1 would be in row 6. He used that assumption to say that 1 would go into r8c6 no matter which number 345 was used in r8c1. It is also possible that if it is a 3 in r8c1 the 1 could go into r8c5. The only thing this should have told him is there is no possibility for a 1 to be in r8c4.

Although it is a moot point, since the 2 is in r9c1 it makes the column 1 clue [35] impossible for it to be a 3.

Well done again Simon!
Some comments say you were lucky in row 8. But you were right with placing the 1 in C6. The minimum of 3 in R8C1 + the 1-6 clue on top of C5 make that 1 can indeed only go in R8C6.
It was once more a joy to watch!

When a sudoku makes you go from ‘How do I solve this? There are too many options!’ to ‘Oh, none of these digits can appear in these boxes. This is crazy!!’, then you know you’re dealing with a very clever puzzle. That was surprisingly fun and really interesting, thanks both. :)

Simon, I thought you could use another comment scolding you about the 13:57 logical error. lol.

I am amazed with how quickly Simon can get a jump on these new rule sets. I usually spend a long time just to grasp how the puzzle works.

I have nothing to say except: I appreciate your channel a ton \o/

One of the best things to me about this channel is - it doesn't matter how far back I go in time, to watch older videos, they still have the same value ^^

Simon getting really lucky on row 8...

(Also if he had considered the other possibility available given what he knew in the row would be pretty quick to see it broke in the column, so wouldn't have even had to add much time to the solve in theory...)

Based on Simon's enthusiasm, I'm excited for the Christmas puzzles coming to Patreon! Richard!! 349 Holy Guacamole!

It's a wonderful puzzle. But perhaps the shoutiest at the screen ever lol.

(Simon, you got lucky with a logic error with the clue in row 8. You got right answer for wrong reasons. It's the clue in column 5 that should have pointed it.)

Thank you for showcasing this wonderful puzzle. Good one Richard.

I'm so glad you got the 4-8 clue at the beginning! I noticed it after you placed the 9s. Then once you placed the 2 it was solved. I loved the solve path for this whole puzzle!

22:11 finish. I focused on the clue cells in row 1 to start, almost exclusively. This allowed me to work outside to in. Very fun puzzle!

As much as I enjoy watching these solves - and as far from being able to actually accomplish such an amazing feat - this is one video where I found myself actually talking to the screen, the way Simon sometimes says he imagines people must be doing. :) Such a rarity from such a short video.

13:42 Error here that worked out. You neglected the option of "35??1?", assuming instead only "3?5??1" as possible with a 3 in the left column. This meant that the 1 was NOT placed HOWEVER, "35??1?" wouldn't have worked anyway because of the column; placing the 1 in the column in row 8 would force the 6 to be below it, with a distance of 1, duplicating the 1 in the column; though you did miss that step and jump to placing the 1 without full logic.

Tried solving it myself again. Took an hour again. Got really stuck filling in the top row and especially the 2-7 clue in column 8. I was trying to force something that wasn't really there yet. Don't know why I'm writing this really. Gonna keep posting it though when I solve something. Thanks CTC for all the videos.

I know I’ve seen so many on the channel, but any sudoku without any numbers in the starting grid is still a delightful surprise
