A London church described as an “architectural and historical treasure” has been destroyed in a fierce blaze overnight. About 80 firefighters were called to St Mark’s Church, St John’s Wood, late last night, bringing the fire under control at 2.22am, London Fire Brigade said.

My question is, why were a dozen or so fire engines with blues and twos hurtling around the streets of Bayswater looking for a fire, 1.5 miles away from the church, from 11:30pm until midnight? We could smell the smoke here, but the fire was elsewhere. Was this some kind of distraction tactic?

The only church that illuminates us is the one that burns
