The House of Atreides is like the Realm of Ultramar in Warhammer 40k. A prosperous realm where their worlds do not suffer and their people live in while the rest of the Imperium goes through hell just to get through another day.

Although the Spacing Guild had no military power of its own, it could—through withdrawal of transportation services—cripple any solar system. And with elaborate surveillance mechanisms, the Guild could trace and identify rogue attackers and send messages off to the Emperor, who in turn would dispatch Imperial Sardaukar according to mutual treaty.

I never thought I would finally see a good Dune movie and here we are…finally.

I never understood the logic of the Emperor's plan in Dune. If the Houses assume the Emperor had nothing to do with the attack on Arrakis, then the Houses would think the Emperor was too weak to enforce his decisions (Who should have Arrakis). On the other hand, if they found out that he was behind it all, they would assume he could not be trusted, and subsequently lose all respect and allegiance to him. Either way, the Emperor's position appears to be weakened by the plan.

Is there something from the novel that adds more to his plan that makes it make more sense?

DUNE is fundamentally about three things, none of them are technology because that wasn't the point:

1. Ecology & the interaction between human beings and geography

2. The meaning of good government: House Atreides (benevolent, principled) vs House Harkkonen (greedy, corrupt & self-serving)

3. The danger of charismatic leaders & the interaction between human beings, religion, belief, tradition, revolution and war
