Recently. The Thomistic Institute posted a video on “A Metaphysical Argument for the Existence of God” that comes from an early text of St. Thomas, called “De Ente et Essentia,” which can be translated as “On Being and Essence.”

In this text, St. Thomas is primarily arguing for a philosophical point that is a unique contribution to philosophical thought: that there is a real distinction between what something is, or its essence, and the act of that thing’s existence.

Watch the full video “A Metaphysical Argument for the Existence of God,” with Fr. Ambrose Little, O.P., on our new Aquinas 101 learning platform.

How do we draw the line between essence and accidents? Would the arrangement of the particles of a turtle be its essence or its accidents?

"It's turtles all the way down."

So what is essence? Does it means way in which small objects arranged to form big object?

This is very interesting, but now we know that the turtle's "turtleness" and the color that is defined here as a matter of "essence" separate from turtleness are both matters of the turtle's genetics.

The distinction was already introduced by Avicenna 2 centuries before Aquinas
