German here.
I don't know what exactly is meant by “slow pace”.
I work 35 hours a week.
No Saturday and no Sunday and my employer gives me 30 days paid vacation a year.
No shifts.
Every day from 7am to 3pm with a 45 minute break each day (all because of the IG Metall union).
PS: I am a normal employee. Not a super duper special snowflake. Many employees have these conditions. (But of course not all)

In Germany, supermarkets and stores are also closed on Sundays. (There are of course exceptions, such as petrol stations or clinics).
You're practically forced to slow down a bit and, on top of that, Germans don't have to constantly worry about whether they have enough money for children, hospital stays or the dentist like many People in the USA. That alone takes a lot of stress out of everyday life.

Anyone who has ever been to Germany will be able to confirm that life is not as hectic as in the USA, where everything is mainly geared towards earning and having lots of money. We know the effects there all too well, burn outs, physical and nervous breakdowns are the order of the day, it's pure stress.
That's why there is such a drastic difference to Europe, we work to live, in the USA you live to work.

I assume there are a lot of similarities between Canada and Germany, or Vancouver Island and rural German areas > where you can get around with public transport but most people have a car and jump in to do the trip e.g. to the grocery shop.
One another rural German info from myself: long years I jump on my bicycle for a 8 minute ride, change into a train and commuted to Munich. Car driving into the city usually ended up in traffic jams 😞
USA: Well I guess there are chilled and nice places as well, but especially in cities more hustle and bustle. And as pointed out in the video: the mindset of the community is much more: you are how much money you can make instead of: well done, if you have a nice and chilled life.

There definitely are "islands of tranquility" in Canada. I have not much experience with US daily life but would expect it to have such places as well, maybe to a lesser degree.

Vancouver Island? Yes, I guess you would fit in quite well over here.
The farther north you go in your country, the more laid back the people seem to be (as far as I can tell as a foreigner). People in the Okanagan seem pretty chill as well 😊

Germany is actually great for work life balance. A working day usually is no more than 8, 5h including half an hour of break time inbetween. After that you drop everything, wish everyone a "schönen Feierabend!" and leave. There's a big difference to the US however in that you're actually expected to work. I've heard from americans that they spend sometimes upwards of 10h at their workplace but their output is abysmal. That sort of thing won't fly here.

One full-time-job is enough to live in Germany

Most people in Germany work 40 hours a week max. 37, 5 hours is also very common. Saturday and Sunday is off, unless you work in a Store or Restaurant. When you work 8 hours a day you need to Take at least a 30 Minuten break, 9 hours = 45 Minuts, 10 hours = 1 hour break. Work Life Balance and worker rights 😎

I heard the slow life thing from a Korean guest student.
I guess you only notice that when you come fro somewhere else.

Moin, Mace! If you live in a more rural area, you also won't get far without a car!!!

The one reason why I won't leave Germany is because I'm too broke XD

i really hope it stays that way. There are political parties and people who want to change much of these.

UK border patrol has always been a pain in the ass because the UK was not part of the Schengen area. There were only three countries with more unpleasant border patrols (and 2 don't exist anymore) that I've personally experienced: 3. USA (before 2001, don't know how it is nowadays), 2. The Soviet Union, 3. The GDR (communist East Germany).

Until no 10, as he mentioned his skin colour, I didn't even noticed it! It was just a random guy talking on cam, not "a black person" ... compared to Germany, beein' black in the states seems to be sadly still an issue?! o_O Me don't care about colour ... so much, that I even didn't noticed it! XD
