i remember when i was little there was a glitch in the first world where the airship for some reason just few up to the top left corner like ur showing. it happened after me and my brother kept dying over and over. i wonder if the player being stored up there had something to do with the ship going there. being so little me and my brother didnt realize it was a glitch and just thought that since we kept dying to the ship it just got away and we had a sort of game over... thats interesting

I think the reason this happens is the loser gets the "death" animation of being sent back to the map. On 2p mode, a death signals the player switch. On 1p mode, this simply lets the player continue the game. And if that player happens to be Luigi, then Luigi keeps playing.

This is actually really crazy to me, I haven’t been genuinely surprised by a video game discovery in quite some time.

Very cool, it really is amazing that new things are being found out about this game all these years later. For me this game is a timeless classic and possibly one of the best games on the NES. Thanks for sharing!

The fact that someone really thought to them self "Hmm imma enable walk through walls and to to the top left corner of the world map"

The SNES version can monitor controller ports and enables 2P with one controller. When you try to play the Battle Game it just buzzes at you.

I remember when I was a kid beating the game twice in a row to get the inventory full of hammer suits. Today, I can't find anything about this. Emulators, wii, wiiu and Switch versions of SMB3 dont have that secret features.

Makes sense. The 0, 0 XY coordinate would be on the upper left corner, so anything that doesn't have a designated place on the map would be there.
There's something similar in Super Mario World where if you place Mario on any tile on the map that isn't a level and press A you'll always enter the bonus stage. Every tile is set to 0 by default, and the bonus level is assigned to number 0.

How was this not found sooner?
I am honestly amazed

You know what, I think shorts work really well for Boundary Break. Sometimes I don’t feel like sitting down for an entire episode, but a 1 minute highlight reel of the coolest stuff would be great.

For those who dont know, the mario bros stage is activated in 2p mode if one player walks onto the other

You madman! Now it’s been documented! Sort of.

Stuff like this gives me hope that maybe we'll never run out of new stuff to find in SMB3. Thanks for posting.

ive done this countless times by accident when corrupting for years. but the fact that its because thats where the player 2 is stored is new to me.

Poor Luigi. He has to let this egomaniac win in a classic Mario matchup just to let him have a turn in the new game every single time.

I bet that each World Map has one of these, as that's just the 2-Player Battle Mode where the players can try to steal each other's cards.
EDIT: A quick test on an emulator confirms that this hidden stage does indeed exist on World 2 and World 5 maps at least, also the little lakes on World 2 map crash the game if you try to enter them, even though they're programmed like level tiles.
I'm gonna have to play around with this later for sure.

It's so awesome that new things are still being discovered about this game released in 1990! Merry Christmas and keep up the great work Shesez! 🎅

Your made this a short when other channels would have padded this out into a 10+ minute video. Thanks for respecting your audience!
