How to Easily Fix and Replace a Spark Plug Boot

I bought a second hand used coil for my strimmer. The spark plug boot and retaining spring were detached from the cable. I put it back together making a better and more secure connection.
So here's how to fix it or replace it, quickly and easily.

My husband who is not a handyman thought the boot was broken and needed to take snipper to mower shop for repair. Thanks for your video. It solved the problem and hopefully will save us money.

Like many others, this saved me a real headache. Had bought a “spares and repairs” hedge trimmer which would run but died under revs. Did the full fuel system (as you do), service etc and went to test. Pulled the plug to dab some fuel directly into the cylinder and *ping* there goes the spring from the boot. Hadn’t had to address that before so this video was really useful. Hedge trimmer now working! Hurrah.

I'll add my praises to the already long list...I couldn't figure out why my Makita DCS6421-20 wouldn't start. I eventually discovered the spark plug wire was really loose so I found your video and went back, fixed it like a boss. It started right up! Thanks for helping me learn another lesson. You're a really good teacher...

You are a lifesaver! I just removed the boot from my trimmer to replace the spark plug and noticed a coil wrapped around the tip of the spark plug. "Well, that's new." I'm used to seeing that little flat piece of metal in the boot that holds on to the spark plug by tension. But anyway, thanks for solving that mystery for me.

Thank you 🙏 I was 5 minutes away from throwing my strimmer in the river 👍

I thought I was in the market for a new trimmer until I pulled the boot off. Your video helped me do a simple fix. Fired right up. Thanks!

Thank you for posting this. I just had my five year old lawn mower quit on me. Then not start any more. I took it apart slowly. Went to clean out the plug for any built up dirt/oil. The pieces of metal in the boot fell out. Broken in two pieces. I guess it just got old? Happy to find out it's most likely just the boot itself is the problem. Explaining why it totally stopped starting.

Thank you, I just fixed my trimmer by following your method. Saved me from replacing the whole spark plug cable.

Thank you for a very helpful video upload. I have spent a good few hours wresting with this issue. I must say it really is quite shameful of Stihl to adopt such a poorly engineered spark plug connector when there have been many over the years that simply crimp onto the Lead.

if you strip the insulation material back around 1/2", then make the wire end into a sharp V instead of the L shape, you can wrap the exposed wire around the V tightly, apply a bit of solder to it and then tuck it into the insulated rubber. makes a much tighter connection.

Thank you. I was wondering why I was getting shocked through the sparkplug boot while operating my string trimmer. I did a similar repair and added a layer of electric tape around the prong. Better than new.

Thanks for this. I went to pull the spark plug from my son's dirtbike and when I pulled the cable off the spring was stuck on the plug. I thought there would have been a metal clip that locks over the spark plug and this was just some home repair job done after the original broke. I follow your vid to reconnect the wire and spring. Thought I was up for a new cable or end connection.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I have just bought a replacement boot that's just like this and I was wondering how to fit it...now I know!

Great video! BTW, those (relatively new) springs are the pits! Difficult to push onto spark plug and difficult to pull

Thank you very much for posting this video. I made a stupid mistake and pulled the boot off the plug wire of a very old lawn mower. I dug around and found this video, and I was able to fix it even with it being a different engine.

Found this video after cleaning carb failed. The back side of boot was severed. Followed this method and it started right up!

Just bought a new auger from Amazon and it was the only one that came with the bit I needed, was good price, shipped here within two days only to arrive not working. I think it is the spark plug was not connected properly and this video shows me exactly what to do! I was about to pay someone to come do what I knew had to be simple but never seeing it before myself could not proceed. Ty :)

WOW, Stihl should be ashamed for this one. A simple change can go hectic just because of this design. Thank you for the demonstrating this for us
