How To Restore Your Chat History on Android | WhatsApp

Learn how to restore your WhatsApp chat history on Android. Transitioning to a new Android phone and keeping the same phone number? After backing up your WhatsApp account with Google Drive on your old phone, you can easily restore your chat history on your new phone.

To ensure that your chats are backed up before restoring them on a new Android device, open WhatsApp, More options, Settings, Chats,Chat Backup. Choose the Google Account that you want your chats backed up to. You can also create a local backup on your device. Tap BACK UP. After the backup has been saved, you can remove WhatsApp from your device and install it on your new Android device. For extra security, make sure to turn on encrypted backups.

The "restore backup" option does not pop up. Unable to find it in the list of options. Please make it an option somewhere, instead of relying on it popping up automatically.

If "Restore Backup" option does not pop up, make sure that you allowed every permission. When it asks permission for photo and videos, don't choose "When only using app" which is on the top. Choose 2nd option "Allow everyone" or "Allow everytime" (I'm not sure which one) instead. My app language is different so the labels are not %100 correct but you got the idea. After you choose that, that option should pop out.

For people complaining about restore option not popping up while reinstalling whatsApp.
1. Uninstall whatsApp
2. Perform all initial processes while reinstalling.
3. Enter the password.
4. "Allow all" Permission to access photos nd videos. (This is the main step. By default, limited access is enabled in most phones.)
5. Voila.!!!! Restore will pop up now

If the backup is on a google account mentioned how can access that backup without deleting n installing the app again...why have a backup in a google account when it's so difficult to access it...

I don't get the prompt to restore chat on the new phone, even after uninstalling and re-installing whatsapp. I can look in the settings_chat and see my old backup is there, so I know I have a backup. There doesn't seem to be a button to "restore from back up" - what am I missing?

What if the backup was done on a different Google account then the default when setting up the phone. How will Whatsapp know which Google account to pull the backup from?

Restore Options never prompt, uninstall and install 3 times, still didnt prompt that "restore" option. I checkee Google drive and confirmed backup file exist

Even though I've been doing weekly backups through whatsapp app, when I moved to a new phone all that managed to get restored were 3 chats, from 5 years ago... I have also not received messages for a day; and even after exporting chats from the old phone to the new one, there are messages missing... Disappointed.
