Misses the most interesting part - the only way they discovered why it crashed was a piece of metal from the fuselage that had a brown stain on the outside facing part, which turned out to be nicotine - it was damaged so long ago in the tail strike people were still smoking on planes. The air was leaking out over that period to cause the stain and then many years later the crack had spread over the entire fuselage which caused the tail to come off and entire plane to disintegrate. Smoking helped solve this air crash mystery.

The horrific part is that the NTSB determined that many of the passengers were still alive and conscious for at least 20-40 seconds after the plane broke apart mid-air.

The human body typically has enough oxygen in the lungs and bloodstream to last anywhere from 20-40 seconds after oxygen is cut off. Some of the passengers might have been able to hold their breath long enough to reach a low enough altitude where there was enough oxygen in the atmosphere. This would mean that they were completely awake during the time it was falling through the air before ultimately crashing into the ocean.

Almost exactly the same thing happened to Japan Air Lines Flight 123 on August 12, 1985. The 747 suffered explosive decompression, lost most of its vertical tail and all hydraulic controls, and slammed into a mountain. Of the 524 passengers and crew onboard, only 4 survived. It turned out the plane's rear pressure bulkhead had been improperly repaired following damage from a tail strike 7 years earlier.
