June 2, 2023 the DOI announced that will end new oil and gas leases surrounding Chaco Canyon for the next 20 yrs. This decision was made possible by decades of advocacy, citizen science, and direct action by our Navajo and Pueblo relatives and Tribal Leaders. This is 100% a win for all people and the planet. Sadly, the Navajo Nation President put out a letter opposing the decision and is currently promoting false information that the decision threatens Tribal sovereignty and infringes on Navajo People’s land rights.
On Sunday, June 11th the DOI planned an event at Chaco Canyon to celebrate the decision but the event was relocated due to counter protesters blocking the road into Chaco Canyon.
There is a lot of confusion on what this decision to protect Chaco means and how it impacts the Tribal members who live within the area.
Join us for this dialogue with Navajo and Pueblo community members to share what happened on June 11th at Chaco Canyon, to break down what the order does and doesn't do, and how we can take steps to heal the division created by misinformation.

I was on this whole call and was shocked and not necessarily surprised to hear these stories about what unfolded around the Chaco Canyon incident. WHOA! this is very telling of the many folds of internalized and external colonialism, white supremacy, land grabs, and misogyny. Just how the Republicans like it. I SO APPRECIATED all the reports, the passion, the shock, the truths told, and the dedication and exhaustion. EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS!
