In this video I breakdown practical differences between Sony 24GM and 20G from a perspective of a wedding photographer. Sony 20G feels like a smaller brother of 24GM and it's also 500$ cheaper - but how good is it? Watch the video to see the photo samples!

I've been shooting 35+85 for the last 9 years, and in my experience the 20mm it's the perfect compliment to that setup. 24mm is just too similar to 35mm. For the dance floor, the 20mm is glued to my camera. I also use it a lot in different part of the day, even for portraits. The key is to put your subject as close to the center as possible. If you try to use it as a 35, the perspective distortion will kill you. If 35 is the safe and boring lens, the 20 is my special fun lens.

Thanks for your sharing! I already have 24mm G and now plan to purchase 20mm G. Because of the close-up of 20mm G. It inspires me a lot!

Bought the Sony 20mm 1.8 and have been extremely happy with it. Great video. Also, I need a hoodie like

Both are outstanding lenses. Depends on lens combo, 20-35-85, or 24-50-135. On high MP images, crops are so easy.

Magic, your dance floor shots are, as the kids say, lit!

I got the 20mm. The little extra width helps make up for the active stabilization crop i get on my S3.

I tried a lot of diffrent gear for my wedding photography and developed to an only primes shooter. Last year I bought a 24GM but sold it after one year of usage. Maybe you think I am crazy, but I am so much in love with 28mm! For me it is just the right allrounder, 35mm feels for me (especially inside) often to tight and a 24 definitly to wide for general stuff and people. Usually I like to be close to the business and 28mm is for me the widest prime I like to use for people . I hope so much, Sony will develope a 28 f1.4 GM, but until I am using FE 28, 55, 85 and for the realy wide shots a Voigtländer 15 f4, 5 III (still have a 35 f1.4 Voigtländer Classic for funky stuff with crazy flares, but just as add-on lens)

I have switched from Pentax k1 who i had a 15-30mm and I have somes epic shoot with that, but I have to made some money choice to choose my new setup, and after looking lot of video, and your I have choose the 24gm 1.4 at wide lens instead of my 15-30, I know I will not able to make all the pictures, I'm hoping to not be frustrated when I will come back of my first wedding on the Sony system.

One thing that you did not mention when considering focal length, is that new Sony cameras will crop in, in some modes to compensate. This is something I have thought about when buying E-mount lenses, because I just purchased a Sony A74.
If you turn on active stabilization the A74 will crop in when shooting video.
If you turn on lens compensation, the A74 will crop in a little.
If you turn on focus breathing compensation when shooting video, the A74 will crop in a little.
If you use Catalyst Browse software to stabilize a video the software will crop in.
After listing these modes when the A74 crops in for compensation, it looks like the compensation crops affect video more that photography.

I'm currently using the 85 1.8 at weddings and I'm about to buy a wide angle as an addition! it will probably be the 20th 1.8. as I can use it on my a6000 second body at weddings in 30mm crop and also for landscapes in my spare time. the best deal for me. and thank you for the comparison! I was waiting and hoping for that! keep it up!

I have both and I've used both at weddings. The 24mm just has little extra bit of magic with background seperation and telling a story without as many distractions. I'm keeping both but my current go-to set up is the 85mm F1.4 and the 24mm F1.4. I think it's a killer combo.

You could crop into 20 mm to obtain 24 mm like perspectives. Or, if you had A7r IV, you could get 30 mm 26 mp pictures using the aps-c mode. So if you just need to keep one lens, keep 20 mil. However, in the wedding situation, I think a fast zoom lens will be more useful.

Great review. I purchased the 20mm used for $700 to give it a go. I just didn't find a sweet spot to use it as often as I do the 24mm. And when it comes to the drag shutter dancing shots I prefer the 14mm GM. 14mm adds to the look and I crop in a little if needed. It's just a random focal length that didn't work for me. Might for others. I only took a $40 loss in Ebay fees.

I want an updated 28mm lens. A 28mm f/1.8 G lens would be amazing to pair with my 50m GM f/1.4.

I’m leaning towards the 20mm (20, 35, 85). I do more video than stills and active stabilization pushes the 20 towards 24mm once the active stab crops in. So, it’s the 20mm for me. I have the f1.4 in the 35mm since that’s my sweet spot! :-)

i sold my 20mm Sigma because wasnt wide enough and was to close to my 35/1.4 and i bought Viltrox 16mm, now my trio 16+35+85 cooperate perfectly, i wish i had this sony 20mm, because atm is the best 20mm on the market.
