I hate to say that I really liked the flat wound sound. Felt much cleaner. Maybe regular strings for practice and such and flat wound for special occasions like recording or playing on stage

I thought flatwound was common for jazz players who liked that buttery soft attack that seems more consistent between notes, it definitely seems that way here.

I wasn’t expecting it to really have a difference! But it did!! The flat wound are better in my opinion they sound fuller

I thought the flat wounds just sounded like regular wounds that have been on your gat too long and started losing that brightness hahah

“Heavy price tag.” Welcome to the bass player’s life.

Being a jazz guitarist I put flatwounds on an epiphone les paul trad pro, probably one of the nicest sounding guitars in my entire collection

regular wounds sound brighter, while flat wounds sound more soft and sweet because they lack that biting brightness

However, if you get regular wounds you can just EQ your setup so it sounds like flat wounds

IMO get regular wounds because they are more versatile

me, a bassist who found flatwounds for 35 dollars: "wow that's a good deal!"

Hey Mikey, I love your vids. Can you please do a full long video of showing us all the gear you use and own. I have been waiting for this to come out for ages. It would be awesome if you can

While the choice between them is very much a matter of taste, this is one of those things where the difference in both feel and tone is very real.

I’d imagine, given both the brighter attack and cheaper price tags, that most players are still better served by roundwounds, you can definitely see why jazz players who want a softer and cleaner tone prefer them.

The difference in feel and the amount of “whirr” from moving along the string are also significant factors pushing jazz players to them, which you can’t just EQ out. It’s nothing earth-shattering, but they are substantive differences.

I've always found flat wound better for warmer softer tones and regular wound strings are better for something where you need more articulation

Bruh plays that same riff in every video I love it

Flat wound gives it an SG type of clean straight forward tone

Sounds smoother and buttery almost! I did not expect such a difference!

flat wounds sounded like they had much more pleasing overtones and less harsh ones. I'd say it's worth it for recording/ performance situations, but not everyday practice or just jamming
