$513 5GHz Special Edition CPU - Intel 9900KS Review

Here is my review of the new Special Edition Intel Core i9 9900KS CPU, which is still an 8-core / 16-thread processor, but runs at 5 GHz across all cores. I have comparison benchmarks with the 9900KS vs the Ryzen 9 3900X, Ryzen 7 3700X, Intel i7 8700K and the original 9900K.

Apparently the 9900KS is selling for $570+ today, which makes me feel lied to. I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt on the "reasonable" price premium, but just to be clear: buy the 3900X instead.

Really like the 100% baseline that you've been using lately! It's super helpful, and easy for viewers to quickly understand :-)

My favorite thing w Paul is he's as legit as it gets. No fluff. He tells it how it is, end of story. I can truly trust his results

I bought this CPU for processing real-time audio through lots of plugins and minimal latency (currently I work @ 64 samples). This is the standard workflow for modern studios and it requires LOTS of single-core power. This CPU is awesome for that.

Steve at Hardware Unboxed also pointed out that the KS only has a 1-year warranty instead of the 3-year one with the K.

What a great comparison video. Excellent work! I'm waiting for all the new releases next year, and that's when I'm going to build my first gaming rig.

Paul you're always fair and honest in your opinions as proven in this review. I have to assume you're not aware the 9900KS comes with instead of the standard 3 year warranty on the K series, the KS has a 1 year even though they've over-volted/over-clocked the snot out of what is a binned 9900K. Great review as always thanks for all the work...

Thank you for doing all the comparisons!

i got myself a less expensive 9900k and won the silicon lottery. mine boosts up to 5ghz (all cores) on a manual overclock; so im pretty happy

I'd like to see operating cost added to the "Price v Performance" slide.
if the intel cost more to operate (higher tdp) then the slightly higher price tag might not seem that good.

At this point 3700x makes more sense. Trade blows well, a good enough cooler with the cpu, all at a lower price.

I enjoyed seeing all these benchmarks Paul. I do plan to get a new computer soon and either the K or KS family of chips would definitely perform well for my needs.

Ooof, this is my 4th 9900ks video. I'm doing it for you Paul. You deserve the views. I love your style.

Im all for a 5ghz cpu. It's cool it just is (even if it is a bit of a gimmick). However I paid $499 for my 3900x. If this was a 12c/24t 5ghz cpu itd be easier to get excited about. Even if I just wanted a gaming chip it would be hard for me to leave the extra cores/threads, performance and power efficiency on the table and have to pay more to do so. Morally it just seems wrong. That being said I never build a machine to just game so maybe I'm not the target audience for this chip.

107 degrees, well... my old Pentium 4 just got it's "space heater" title stolen

Probably should have addressed the power-hunger and the thermals a bit more. 107 degress is a lot and considering that it didn't throttle at all is a huge concern.

This video did a great job at convincing me to buy a 3900x. Thanks Paul!

Are the temps right? 107-C = 225-f, you can boil water on that thing!
