There was a Superman movie in the 80s, Superman was drunk or something and he straightened the tower so it was vertical. There was an artist painting the scene on canvas. He was very angry with the change.

so, this explains how the builders countered the lean, but not *how* it got it's lean. did the foundation not support it's weight on one side?

If it wasn’t for the lean, it wouldn’t have been half as famous. BTW the lean was getting dangerous, so they put tons and tons of lead on one side to fix it, but not too much, so it still looks leaning.
