That 2nd catcher was forever known as Moose Knuckle after that replay went live on TV.

I was a catcher back in the day and I’m dead serious about this. I had a pitcher that threw a knuckle ball once and I read, “Wilson”, as it got to me. Floated right over the plate like a dam bubble. Zero spin. It’s one of those memories that is stamped on your soul.

What madlad first thought, “I wonder what happens if it doesn’t spin at all”

That Wakefield knuckleball literally spun half an inch the entire way. It is hypnotic

Love the Wakefield clip. One because it's a phenomenal pitch.2 because its the Pirates when they were still good. 3 because it's has my favorite catcher. Don Slaught. Remember sitting by the bullpen and talking to him when I was a kid. He signed a ball for me that day. Little did I know i should keep the the ball instead of playing baseball with it.

Been a Mets fan for over 40 years. R.A. Dickey's 2012 season was one of the most magical things I've ever seen in baseball. A 38 year old knuckleballer they picked up off the scrapheap goes 20–6 and wins the Cy Young. Really, truly incredible.

A catcher once said that there are two theories on catching a knuckle ball, and they are both wrong.

My favorite pitch in high school to throw, mine was so slow I threw it one time and catcher ( who had the habit of standing on high pitches) started to stand and I yelled "Get Down!" The catcher returned to the ready position at the same time the knuckler dropped off the table for a strike. There should be a league just for the knuckler LoL

For the last one, it is also beautifully videotaped, great pov behind the catcher instead of behind the pitcher.

That was a classy and polite acknowledgement to that nut shot there. 🎩

I remember Throwing a knuckleball just for fun at practice. I’m telling you. No cap. No boast. No biast. It was the best knuckleball i have ever seen anyone throw in the big leagues or in any other series. It has absolutly no spin. And i mean it. It was completly still in the air. It moved like crazy and my catcher agreed with my statement. Neither he had seen such a good knuckleball in his entire life. I cant stress this thing. It was really, really, completly distant from any rpm. Mabye 0.1 complete spins a week.

RIP Tim Wakefield. Learned how to throw a knuckler from seeing him explain it in the late 90s.

Tim Wakefield is one of my favorite pitchers. I got an autograph when I was a kid. Royals vs Red Sox.

Hardest pitch to throw at any speed and fun fact a hard pitch to hit at any speed. Although I must say, throwing this over 75 mph is the scariest experience for a batter to have. I had a pitching machine that could throw a knuckleball between 90 to 95 mph. The first thing you realize about a knuckleball is there is no predicting where exactly the ball will end up and hit a different spot on the back stop every time. Fastball 100mph no problem there is like an 8in square zone the machine will typically stay in, 80-95mph knuckleball is a 3' radius and you are definitely in a bit of that zone 75 is uncomfortable but ok to get hit with. The only thing about a knuckleball is when they hit you. It's like the difference between getting hit by someone that knows how to box and someone who is just strong. Like strong still hurts but it rolls off, the boxer hit sticks to you and you feel a complete transfer of energy. Person experience 😣

Growing up, I played baseball year round for like 16 years. When I joined travel ball and began playing in tournaments, we picked up this kid named Dax. Dax was a catcher who had a pretty decent arm but absolutely pin point accuracy. One day he comes to practice talking about knuckle balls. He said he was gonna learn to throw them. 2 years later, and he was our catcher and also a reliever for us. That kid couldn’t throw ANYTHING besides a fastball, and knuckle ball. Was one of the best pitchers I’ve ever saw and we played against some of the best teams across the country lol. His knuckle ball had literally 0 spin. The ball just kinda floated across the plate going left, right, up, and down all at once.

I love baseball as much I love bacon…which is a lot.
One of the many things I love most in baseball is seeing a knuckleball in slow motion floating to the plate with almost no spin!
