Amazon Echo Show 5 Review: An Alexa display with alarm clock smarts

When Amazon introduced the second-gen Echo Show display last year, it was a huge upgrade over the original, with a built-in browser, better sound and more video options than before. Just months later, however, and Amazon has released a new model called the Echo Show 5 (In case that's confusing, the "5" refers to the screen size, much like how Amazon names its Fire tablets).

I love this device for its smarts, camera and great speakers. Definitely recommend. I like the nest hub also. Just in a different way.

Really don't understand why you don't compare it to the Lenovo smartclock instead of the Nest Hub..
I mean it's so obvious that's it's meant to compete with it.. same design, same form factor, same fonctionnality.

This is the best video on EchoShow 5. It does so much more than shown on the other review videos, like connecting to Nest and browsing on Firefox, which made it more valuable. Looking forward to getting one

If it has a camera, people complain about privacy issues. It it doesn't, then people complain about not having video calling. I like my video calling. So sorry Google, I went with Echo Show instead.

How is lack of camera a positive thing for the Nest? You shouldn't even be comparing it to the Nest.

Can this be rigged up to a bed shaker to remotely activate it? I have a deaf daughter I need to be able to wake up remotely via WiFi.

Canadians be warned. You don't get many of the benefits of this device if you live in Canada. Not even temperature support. Keep an eye on it and if this changes, then maybe grab one.

Stupid Alexa alarm is driving me mad. We do not want to have to speak to Alexa when the alarm goes off, just tap it to snooze. We used to be able to then cancel the alarm by tapping the screen at any time and selecting cancel. It would then go off the next week day (it is set for every weekday at 06:30). Recently, this has changed. There seems to be no way to cancel it without it then disabling the alarm for the next day, so the next day it never goes off. Crazy! What on earth have Amazon done to make this thing so user unfriendly? I don’t want to be forced to speak in the morning, Alexa, snooze etc. Why has this changed? It has been driving us nuts for weeks!

We like the audio quality of the Echo Show 5 . . . Until . . . you pair a bluetooth device, or an Amazon remote. After disconnecting the bluetooth, the built in speaker looses it’s fidelity and sounds very tinny. To return the fidelity to the built-in speakers, I have to unplug the power and plug it back in. Also, when I paired the Amazon remote, the mic function did not work; all the other features worked. I had to pair the Amazon remote to my Echo Dot, and then the remote updated itself and the mic function would work on the Echo Show 5. I may just have a faulty device.
