At the end of the day, Anarcho-Socialism/Communism is a self-contradiction. Socialism/Communism basically amounts to rights of the ruling class and responsibilities of the common populace based on power politics. This one-way relationship *must* be maintained by force.

So when you were discussing the island scenarios, and both shelter and healthcare came up, I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach. All I could think was “well, I feel I would be responsible for taking care of this other person on the island, whether it was just two of us or ten, but why?” Then you continued the analogy and I realized that, no, the other person really can’t have the right to my labor to take care of him and provide shelter. Then I realized where the odd feeling was coming from.

The idea that you have a responsibility to care and provide for that other person comes out of a social contract, not from rights. If you two are a part of (or the sole members) of a cohesive group that lives on the island, you’ve likely formed a social contract geared towards mutual aid and survival. In exchange for everyone contributing labor to continued survival, others are then obligated to care for you if you fall ill or injured. In exchange for this labor of care, the injured party is then expected to return to work after healing to make up for lost labor, especially if time is a factor, like in farming.

But as this is an agreement, explicit or implicit, there is no actual right to this labor of care. Say this group of islanders had a falling out with some members, say 5, who then left to form their own group. These individuals have left the original social contact to form their own. They are no longer under your obligation of care. If you find one of them in the jungle, bleeding out, you aren’t obligated to help (especially if they were a party that brought some sort of harm to your group). The only real obligation to help is in the interest of keeping intra-community relationships on good terms, or to have the injured party’s group owe you and yours a favor in return. Which at that point is an exchange of labor for an trade of abstract value, an IOU.

It is only by a social contract that you are obligated to giving your labor to someone else, and even then this likely has its own set of restrictions.
