My Thoughts On The United Healthcare CEO Murder

UPDATE: Since recording this video, an arrest has been made (NOT JIMOTHY) and BCBS completely rescinded their proposed anesthesia policy!

Also, I hinted at ways we can improve healthcare that are more effective than murder. I know it’s boring, but legislation can have a huge impact on healthcare and health insurance policies.

In the past 5 years we have the No Surprises Act, prior auth reform in New Jersey (more states coming) and the FTC is cracking down on PBMs. Gotta keep stacking wins.

As an individual, you can email your state legislators and/or your state insurance commissioner about harmful insurance practices. Check out your state medical society for active legislation impacting healthcare and throw your support or opposition behind it.

Please see my video description for a few thoughts about effective ways to change healthcare. I recorded this 3 days ago, so it’s a bit behind the news

Hospice nurse here. I have legit had dying patients who were prematurely dying because they couldn’t get the treatment they needed when they needed it, then they end up on our service to die. Moral distress is an understatement for us who are on the ground in hospice holding patients and families through this injustice

As a person whose husband has cancer and needs chemo/immunotherapy to stay alive we have UHC and every prior authorization is denied due to not being necessary. It is a person sitting in an office at UHC that has never seen my husband and at this point I don’t believe they have any medical experience at all denying these prior authorizations. It is literally denied every time and an appeal needs to be done every time. This is ridiculous at this point. The cancer center needs to have a department just to handle all the denials by insurance companies. This is so out of hand.

4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, 3 residency and internship, 1 year chief resident and to top it off, 3 years GI fellowship and I gotta get prior authorization from some person at UHC or BCBS or Cigna or Aetna who graduated high school!! All bill, enough is enough, now is the time for change . Doctors have to stand up for our patients and our profession !!

The problem is that it took a dead CEO and this kind of macabre grandstanding for the public stage to even talk about this with some fervor. And who knows how long that will last. Maybe drama and attention are not what matters, but it's just disheartening how only when a high profile murder happens will the seriousness of millions who suffer matter to the pigs in charge.

I read a comment somewhere that sums it up perfectly. ”He died doing what he loved, not getting medical care in time.”

We have KPIs and now PPD (pay per denials), from the industry. Imagine your Xmas bonus coming from denying others of healthcare. Blood money.

Great content! Being a physical therapist myself and treating seniors who have $50 copay every PT visit is insane. These seniors are squeezed out of their health by United Healthcare. This organization has been escaping public awareness without any scrutiny. Thanks you for raising this incredibly difficult issue!❤

There's also the blatant hypocrisy of the news and NYPD treating this as the most important case while other shooting victims in NYC that same day don't get so much as a mention, and the NYPD puts out a cash reward for information about the UHC shooting. A lot of people feel like the police response shows that they truly just serve the rich and powerful

Just because he was killed doesn't mean criticism of him and United Healthcare should be silenced. Multiple things can be true at once, and the bottom line is that this CEO, United, and other private insurance companies are not in "healthcare", they are in the profit industry.

Dr. Glaucomflecken you are a class act and a gem. Keep doing your thing. Your content has gotten me through some hard times as a nurse.

Speaking as an MHC and the Case Manager for a psychiatric IBRTF, I have seen so many asinine denials from insurance agencies that did not have any part of patient evaluation. That is literally practicing without a license! This should be illegal in every aspect.

It's very rare for (for the lack of better word) influencer to be able to speak plainly & be direct in some controversial matter. It's even rare for them to speak out the truth. You really are sir, a true Dr and stand up human being. Respect over 9000.

Can confirm UHC is the worst. Denied my pregnant wife anti nausea medication because they told her she didn't need it. She was nauseous all day every day until she gave birth. How dare insurance companies think they know more than us and our doctors.

I heard about their evil ways 10 years ago from my then-PCP. He was so stressed out from dealing with them while trying to run his practice as he saw fit. He had left a group that was taken on by Optum, and now was being pressured again to join them. But they’re not the only ones doing ‘corporate takeovers’ of private practices. It’s bullying, and it’s rampant.

United Healthcare denied my brother cancer treatment (this was back in 2009/2010) because they claimed it was a pre-existing condition. He survived but my parents had to sell their house, declare bankruptcy, and eventually got divorced.

I'm not condoning murder. At the same time, I think that this murder might be the reason that anthem Blue Cross backed off on that policy. And if that is the case, there's no two ways around it: this murder literally saved lives. This is the weirdest case because through multiple arguments on both sides of the debate I agree with absolutely everybody. The only thing at this point stopping me from condoning what the shooter did is the slippery slope that it would lead to because this man truly may have just saved a ton of people. It's the weirdest thing.
