Rather than focusing on existing bilateral relationships Modi is taking a scattered approach which in the event of any major conflict would fall apart. For example, India joined QUAD but in recent engagement between China-India Donald Trump washed out his hands stating it was a bilateral issue and India Chain ahs resolve it among themselves although US did not take this view on the issue Kashmir and tried to medal in India-Pakistan conflict. However, Russia being with both, China and India could help mediate to reduce the tensions. Modi had very good relations with Xi Jinping but Modi by carrying out the military exercises with the US in South China Sea annoyed Xi. One has to be very good jockey to ride two horses and even much better to ride three lest you fall in a quagmire!!! India is doing better by go between supper power and establish herself as the key player and should continue in that role rather than marginalizing by distracting here and there in Trilateral cooperation.
