If this impeachment had happened it would have shifted American political power firmly towards congress. This trail is important to study for that reason alone.

8:05 City dwelling Northerners yes but two points need to be made here
1. Catholic immigrants in cities overwhelmingly backed the Democrats while Republicans often came across as either protestant moralists or nativists. Lincoln rejected nativism but a lot of Republicans particularly ex know nothings embraced it and it would come back in 1874 and 1884 to bite the Republicans.

2. This is before the wave of urbanization and this is before white flight surburbia, so this urban population would be wealthier and more business or commerce oriented. This is always overlooked when discussing Federalist, Whig and Republican support in urban areas versus rural support for their opponents. A similar thing happened much later in the South as urbanization of the poor and suburbanization of the middle class flipped Sunbelt cities Democratic in the 1990s and 2000s after having been Republican since the 50s. Dallas, Tampa, Charlotte and Houston went through this process.

6:15 The House has a 2-year election cycle because the founders knew that in popular votes the public could vote in people who were totally unsuitable for public office, but were popular back home. A 2-year cycle gave the government frequent opportunities to correct electoral mistakes. This issue is exacerbated by gerrymandering, where most House seats are "safe", and difficult to replace a sitting representative.
