Dan Snow Reviews Prime Ministers in Historical Movie Scenes

Popular Historian and Television Presenter Dan Snow MBE reviews films depicting UK Prime Ministers in historical films.

Dan reviews Gary Oldman's performance as Winston Churchill in the highly acclaimed 'Darkest Hour' (2017). He then rates Meryl Streep's depcition of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron lady' (2011).

He also reviews 'The Queen' (2006), starring Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen as Prime Minister Tony Blair, who offers Queen Elizabeth II advice after the death of Princess Diana in 1997. He then moves on to rate Jeremy Irons as Neville Chamberlain in the film 'Munich: The Edge of War' (2021), depicting the tense negotiations between Hitler, Mussolini and Chamberlain in 1938.

Next, Dan reviews 'The Madness of King George' (1995) in which Julian Wadham plays Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger as he deals with the growing problem of King George III's mental health.

Finally, Dan reviews 'Mrs Brown' (1997) which sees Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli vie to draw Queen Victoria, played by Dame Judi Dench, out of retirement from public life as she continued to mourn her late husband, Prince Albert.

Darkest Hour received several accolades, including Best Actor for Oldman at the Academy Awards. Oldman also won the BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor--Motion Picture Drama, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

I was already a fan of Dan Snow, but his grasp and detail in this piece are second to none. I find history and particularly that of the United Kingdom very interesting and captivating. There is only one other historian that I enjoy listening to and seeing other than Dan Snow and that is Dr. David Starkey (Praise indeed Mr Snow).

As an American, I truly enjoy Mr. Snow’s absolute knowledge and heartfelt passion for British History! I have enjoyed Dan from the YouTube History Channel plus watching him on Television over here in the middle of America (Oklahoma)…
His passion and knowledge would qualify him for a knighthood (or a least a professor at Eaton or Oxford’)…
I been to Oxford a couple of times and I could see him/hear Dan not only educate but couch his students to think out the box to understand her cherished traditions…only a British citizen ever could…
