The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the outbreak of novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, a pandemic. WHO director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement at a press conference Wednesday.

“Over the past two weeks, the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has increased thirteenfold and the number of affected countries has tripled,” he said. “In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries climb even higher,” he said.

“In the days and weeks ahead, we expect to see the number of cases, the number of deaths and the number of affected countries climb even higher,” Tedros said. “We’re deeply concerned both by the alarming spread and severity, and the alarming levels of inaction.”

For these reasons, he said, the WHO determined that the disease outbreak should be called a pandemic.

1 year ago today, the world changed. The last year has been physically and emotionally draining. But the end to this nightmare is coming. Don’t let up now, we are going to make it through this. ❤️

I really, truly feel like the world actually changed in a very negative way ever since COVID hit. Just think. Don't your memories of the world in 2018 or even 2019 look *so* much different than how things look today? People are angrier, dumber, media sucks, temperatures are rising every year, etc. You dont hear about COVID as much, but its not gone. People are still getting it. I wish the pandemic never happened. Everything seems so much more depressing ever since then. Idk, maybe its just me.

It’s very surreal looking back, I remembered how quickly things unraveled. My very last “normal” school day was on a Thursday, I remember one of the schools administrators coming on the PA system and announcing that tomorrow school would be canceled. One day became 2 days, 2 days became 1 week, one week became 1 month, 1 month became 1 year. I remember how much the pandemic changed me for the better and worse. I felt like March of 2020 I began to grow up and understand how horrible things like this can happen and have global repercussions. I remember seeing coverage of the situation from countries like Brazil and India and how dire the situation was, and it made me appreciate the fact that I live in a country where the situation was to a much lesser extent. I’m truly blessed to have lived through this time alongside my loved ones, but I can’t help but also think of the countless innocent people who had their lives taken from this pandemic. It really is (and hopefully will be) a once in a lifetime event for me and many others.

The day the world changed forever. The way we work. The way we live. The way we spend our time. The way we treat our health. The way we treat each other. It all changed on this day, almost three years ago

If it started in America they would have called it a pandemic when the first case showed up in another country.
