0:00 Intro: In Part II of our Mars vs Moon Colonization video series, we give you the top 10 reasons why NASA and SpaceX Starship should first colonize Mars instead of the moon.
0:50 A key argument for Mars in the moon vs Mars colonization question is that the length of a Martian day is almost exactly like here on earth, which requires less adjustment from our future Mars settlers on SpaceX Starship Mars mission as compared to the moon.
1:37 Another reason for a SpaceX Mars colony instead of moon colonization would be the similar axial tilt of Mars to earth.
2:24 After SpaceX Starship Mars landing, our future Mars colonists would experience a relatively moderate Mars temperature range in a Mars base as compared to the wild moon temperature swings.
3:36 Mars' earth-like topology makes it more fun to colonize as compared to a moon colonization.
5:10 A huge plus for Mars in the Mars vs Moon colonization question is that the higher gravity on Mars would cause less health problems for our future Mars settlers as compared to the extremely low gravity on the moon. This could essentially accelerate Elon's Mars colonization timeline.
6:28 The large water ice reserves on Mars would make the building of Mars Base and Mars colony quite easy as compared to moon colonization.
7:23 Mars is a much more interesting target in the search for extraterrestrial life, especially because the Viking probes are supposed to have discovered Martian micro organisms already in 1976.
9:19 Mars has a thicker atmosphere and more interesting landscape formations than the moon.
10:33 Mars offers natural protection from solar and cosmic radiation as compared to moon colonization.
12:27 Whereas terraforming the moon is almost impossible, terraforming Mars could be achieved with advanced technology after the initial Mars colonization, thus offering comfortable and sustainable Mars bases and Mars colonies.

Okay, enjoyed the whole video now... I prefer constant development of space habitats, so we should focus on Mars whenever the Mars launch window is open, and focus on lunar development when the Mars launch window isn't open. Enjoy your weekend, Jixuan & Sebastian!

Another nice one you 2 congrats. I have some extra reasons to do Mars first.
11) Phobos and Deimos. they are worth exploring for resources and material. They are like captured asteroids and it does not take much DV to get to them.
12) the CO2 atmosphere on Mars can easily be captured and processed into fuel with the "oceans" of water in Mars it would allow Mars to be the hub for the future space Fleet yards of the Solar system. Truly Mars is the gateway to the whole solar system !!! The low gravity and low density of air makes getting into space from Mars easy. Rail guns, rockets, space elevators etc etc..
13) Gravity is low enough to create space elevators as soon as a city with good productivity is established. Need to figure out a way to avoid Phobos though :-) maybe push it up into "geosync" orbit and then tether it as end point for the space elevator LOL !! (sorry I know thats unrealistic until we have enough fusion energy to push it that far)
14) the Moon has no air. There is enough air (1%) resources anywhere on Mars that it can be used to replenish any leaky habitat area easily with specialized "air" pumps that extract the required composition of compounds from the Martian atmosphere for any living area or vehicle. These can be stored in emergency tanks which can be replenished easily independently.
15) Mars is far enough away to be unrestricted by earth politics. Research into thermal nuclear propulsion. Genetic engineering of food crops. Research into genetic enhancements of humans to survive on Mars( survive air with high Co2 content, heavy bones and muscles so that you dont lose muscle and bone in the low gravity ) etc.. no more mad flat earther,

A pro for the moon is that you wouldn’t need to bring food, cause it’s made out of cheese.

Agreed. Colonize both at the same time.

I think the first permanent colony on Mars should be at the deepest narrowest point of Valles Marineris

A good reason to colonize Mars is freedom.
Freedom to make a brand new civilisation based on new morale rules.
Freedom to not have Earth based religions that enslave humanity.
Freedom for Science and brand new experimentations !
Freedom to explore a brand new land with its lots of surprises.
Freedom to love and be loved as all will start with nothing than themselves ;)
Edit : and last but not least : Get rid of all those flat Earthers trolls definitely ! lol ! :P

In the 1980's, the argument for going to Mars first, before colonizing the moon, was that the moon base would eat up all money which could have been used to colonize mars. The moon is close enough for brief visits like Apollo. Mars is far enough that a colony is almost a requirement for any human presence. The colony model is needed for the rest of the solar system, not the Apollo visit model.

You didn’t mention the fact that Martian regolith is not nearly as dangerous as Lunar regolith.

#11: The most important reason is making mankind a multi planetary species. The moon can't provide this. If the moon or earth was hit by a huge asteroid, the other would be seriously negatively affected. Mars is far enough away for the other to not be affected.
#12: It is easier to go to Mars than the moon. You can do a fast burn to go into mars transfer orbit, coast, then aerobrake to slow down. Then only a short burn is needed to land. For the moon you must carry propellant to 100% of the slowing down, and landing.
#13: The components needed to make fuel for the return trip are close at hand on Mars. We don't know of a source of carbon on the moon.

Nicely done. I see no reason that both projects cannot be pursued at the same time.

Good one. I appreciate the thought and research that went into your very well done video. You folks are possibly my favorite on YouTube. Thanks.

Such a wonderful video as always. Makes me want to move to Mars. Love videos that make you think.

If the goal is to make humanity a multi-planetary species in order to get all of our eggs out of one basket, the Moon doesn't really quite accomplish that. Real-time communication and a couple days by rocket will mean that Lunites would never be able to escape being involved in Terra's quarrels.

If we could set up a colony on Mars than could we actually go around and see all of these incredible places or would we be more or less just stuck in one area?

I love this kind of debating 😉 maybe you can do some other planets or moons like Venus 🚀 great episode 👌

I think they could add a color filter to the helmet to make the sky look blue. Much more relaxing.

On to the future! Could you imagine how cool a terriformed moon would look though?? Two habitable celestial bodies next to eachother would be fantastic.

Your arguments for Mars are exactly the same things I was think about. It truly is our best chance at a new world.
After that, maybe Ganymede or Titan.

Dr. Robert Zubrin (founder and president of the Mars Society) says it this way. There are 3 reasons we should make Mars the object of our space program.
(1) Mars is where the science is. (Mars had liquid water for a billion years of its history. If life is a result of conditions, chemistry, and time, we should find remains of life there. If not, we disprove that hypothesis. Also there might be life there now in the underground water.
(2) Mars is where the challenge is. We've been to the moon. We should embrace the challenge. Civilizations die for lack of challenge.
(3) Mars is where the future is. Mars has everything needed to support life, including human life.
P.S. I know this doesn't mean that we should not do the moon first for experience closer to home. This really supports the idea that Jixuan and Sebastian will propose next week: we need to do the moon and Mars TOGETHER.

This comment is before watching the entire video: I believe the most compelling reason to colonize Mars is to create a new and independent nation. Moon colonies will always be "colonial".
