What makes this scene so emotional is that even though Gohan's recklessness caused Goku to kill himself, Goku still had the bigger heart by releasing his son from any guilt. It shows that Goku's pure heart knows no limits. He died with no regrets to save his son and friends. By the end, Vegeta's pride is hurt because he was beaten by Gohan's super strength, and by Goku's ultimate act of sacrifice and love.

People who say Goku is a shit dad can eat crow. Regardless of Goku’s naivety making him oblivious from making personal connections, to say he’s only a selfish person who only loves fighting is to not know who Goku is. There are millions of kids with deadbeat fathers who never gave their sons motivation like this. Goku believed in Gohan when not even Gohan believed in himself.
